Kit Contest: A Holy Hand Grenade's Worth of Survival

"And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

THE CONTEST:

Your mission, noble Knights of BnB, is to create a survival kit of your own design that is contained within (and only within) a MOLLE grenade pouch. Once complete, you are to post a picture of the pouch and contents, listing your survival items and explaining why you chose them. At the end of the contest, the forum will vote via poll for the best survival kit.

THE RULES:

1. You must have 100 or more posts to participate, and be at least 18 years of age.

2. The first 10 members to sign up may PM Wilderbeast with their address and receive a free grenade pouch for this contest (US only). Everyone else has to pay shipping (yes, that includes Canadians). If you already have a pouch, great! Use it! Just to clarify, everyone after the first 10 sign ups has to pay the shipping cost to get a grenade pouch.

3. This pouch should be military surplus/issue, in any color pattern of your choosing (in my experience, these typically come in woodland, desert, ACU, Coyote). However, it must be designed exactly like one of these:

4. While there are no restrictions on what goes INTO the grenade pouch (thus giving you limitless creativity), nothing must be attached to the OUTSIDE of the pouch, nor be sticking out the sides, under the flap, woven through the MOLLE, lashed on in some fashion, etc. So, to repeat, the contents of the kit must by contained within the pouch. I don't care if you fill the pouch with tactical gummy worms, just as long as one isn't sticking outside the cover flap.

5. This is a friendly competition, so no one should be unfairly criticizing what other people do with their kits. Everyone defines survival differently. Someone might make a traditional survival kit. Someone might follow some book's definition. Someone might create a kit for urban survival. Someone might make one meant to survive the undead monkey comet of doom. However, in the end, the forum will decide who "wins" the competition.

THE BOOTY:

He or She who wins shall receive the following prizes:

Heavy Duty Carbon Mora Companion MG and a Darrel Aune Colonial Style steel.

AND

$50 in Wilderbucks to be applied to any purchase in Wilderbeast's Military Surplus Forum.  Any purchase using Wilderbucks will include free shipping.

AND

Apparently, Madmax will spend a night out with the winners kit.

Please gather your Holy Hand Grenade Pouches and begin construction. You have until Easter Sunday, March 31st, to post your kit pictures and descriptions, after which we will poll a winner. Good luck!

Just an addendum...

I will be participating, but my kit will not be polled.

Say your are "in" and PM Wilderbeast for that free grenade pouch (first 10 won't have to pay shipping if they live in the USA!).

Also, your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

Have fun all! I'll be watching for everyone's best ideas!

Rog,

Thanks for taking the initiative to set this up.

A grenade pouch is big enough to pack a mess of essentials as well as a few comfort items but is still small enough to grab and go.

I eagerly await the entries.

Tony, thanks for putting yourself out there.

Yep, and you can just button it to your belt, so there's a convenience factor.

Ok, I can't resist...

Can I play after all? i want in. I'll pay for whatever shipping etc. there is. I'm just super pumped!

This is such a flippin' AWESOME idea. And for Max to volunteer to use the winners is a really cool idea. Totally.

If I win, and he uses mine, I'm gonna put something really gross in it for him to eat... ;)

I have one of these pouches, and have tried to make a kit in it, but theres such a big gap between the flap  and pouch that I worry everything will fall out if it was ever tipped sideways.   Is there a trick I dont know about with these to keep everything contained?

Hey, why don't you just put a sock in it?

I mean inside the pouch, or use a plastic bag, or an otter box or well you get my drift.  I haven't measured one lately but I also suspect you could find a can that would fit in it for a cup/billy with a bale.

See, I overthought it and just expect a bunch of good kits and one crappy one that gets all the votes.  Either way as long as you have a pot and knife, everything else is gravy.

Which reminds me, I have to check to see if a can of gravy will fill that pouch.  8)

I've been working on this today.  So far I have a shelter, sharps, food gathering, cooking, repair and fire extenders.  Still need to figure out what to use for fire making since I dont have an extra ferro rod to pack in there.  :)    And I'm not sure on how far one needs to go on first aide.

Take your time folks, this is no race. It will allow you to tweak or add things to the kit over time. ;)

Even I'll be participating, but I won't count. Which is too bad, because thus far I have a can of Play-Doh, four baseball cards, a rubber band, one die, Bazooka gum, and a tourist map of Albuquerque.

I think it's an awesome idea!

Are we designing this kit specifically for Madmax and the Florida environment, or making a general purpose kit? Just trying to think of what I might want out there. For an overnight I would have to say water and shelter first, then fire, then food and/or something to kill the time.

It can be anything your heart desires, man. It could be a Stuck at the Mall with the Wife Survival Kit. It could be My Bike Busted a Chain and I'm in the Middle of Chicago Survival Kit. It could be the Godzilla! Survival Kit. It could be the The Game is a Blowout and My Team is Getting Creamed Survival Kit. It could be the Wait, My Anniversary is Today? Survival Kit.

Or it could be your standard survival kit.

Use your imaginations, but make it something YOU would use. :)

As much as I want to incite chaos & mischief, I'm only half as dumb as I look.

I'm considering behaving on this ...but only because we frequent the same events & you would undoubtedly find the opportunity to return the favor  >:D

Wow, BigHat! That was a great kit. I especially like the little soda can pot you made. I was thinking about where to find a close fitting little metal container and it never occurred to me to make one out of an existing can. Impressive!

The rest of the contents look well planned. The fire kit is nice too. Compact, but complete.

You have definitely set the bar.

PM sent.

Also I mailed out a mess of pouches today, expect them in a few days folks.  Except you Canadian guys, the word grenade will probably slow them down through customs  >:D.

So I just called it a pouch.

Nice entry, do you think could you squeeze a bullion cube and an air mattress in as well?   ;)

I personally like the aquapur tabs and gallon bag, takes care of the water processing issue.

Good stuff.

Great idea... I'm totally stealing it for my personal pocket fishing kit!!   (but not for the grenade pouch challenge)

- 25 pieces of Berkley Gulp green smelly maggots

How well do these work? They seem like another great addition to my survival/pocket kits.

Ron,
Nice kit.  I dig the light, aquamira tabs, and fishing kit.  That light makes a HUGE difference for those of us that don't sleep well or get up early.  Big time convenience!  The smaller hooks are great.  I catch a dozen small ones for every big one.

The pouch size does make it challenging but it is great to have with you if you ever did need it. There are going to be duplicate items in all of the kits, I'm looking forward to seeing the unique items people put in there kits and the ideas behind them.

So lets see some more kits.

Exactly, not everyone's pouch will be the same, but similarities are expected. We all have a general idea on survival and kit building, after all. :)

Many different ways to skin that cat.  That's why watching how each person approaches this is interesting.

As long as you can cover shelter, water, fire, cordage and a cutting tool, everything else is just cake.

And if you can fit a cake in there, that would be awesome.

I just put one together, I could probably squeeze a small firesteel and scraper in as well as this stuff, but what I have is:

A whistle with a tiny compass glued on it, a square of heavy duty aluminum foil,  Two one pint bags from MRE's, a signal mirror,
instant coffee and chrystal light, an altoids tin wrapped in 30 feet of masons line (which could be pulled apart into 90 feet of cordage) a roll of duct tape, a leatherman micra, toilet paper, two beef cubes, tea, matches and water purification tablets.  And the film canister has a large garbage bag in it.

OK, I got right on this like a fat kid on a candy bar.  What fun, eh?!?

First off, I love that pouch.  Pretty awesome little thing, thanks to 'Beast for getting up here so lickety split.  My wife also liked the pouch and called it 'cute'.  I let it go this time, because, well, I guess in a manly grenade way, it is...

Secondly, while I want to 'enter' the contest, I don't want to be entered into the draw, if that's possible.  I've been blessed by winning a few things lately, and don't want to be a dog in the manger.

Here's a crappy quality video of my USGI Grenade Pouch PSK:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKVb9DV5wBQ

Also, here's a couple of additions since the video.

I threw a piece of duct tape over the pot to help keep the stuff from falling out, and as well I taped a piece of fine sand paper to the inside flap for stropping my knife or whatever.

Thanks for checking this out.

Also, thanks for this excellent contest, and the great entries.  Hope to see lots more!

Thanks friend Rog.  I enjoyed putting it together, and I've been carrying it around just 'cause I like it so much!  I'm really diggin' this idea and the kits people are putting together!

Great looking kit Irish and a nice snake braid bracelet. I have tied that style once and it was time consuming braid.

Lol I prefer to call it a old timer lol. It was given to me by my grandpa when I was a young guy. And who know how long he had it before then. That lil knife had cleaned more wild game than any other I own still holds a great edge and no matter what knife I have it always goes into the woods with me kinda like a good luck charm. Yes that snake braid sucks try making a duck call lanyard in snake braid took me almost 3 hours and my hands were sore. My buddy asked me to make him one and I just laughed..... Then made it. To me gets the cord compact and saves a lil space

Thanks for the comments guys!

I love the various sized crack bags for organizing small items or keeping things dry & have them stashed every where.

For the past year I've been replacing paracord with lighter cordage but i still keep a hank of 550 handy for bigger jobs.

***MR. T's Social Situation Coping and Survival Pouch***

I have to say that all of the kits so far have been awesome! I am blown away by what you folks have come up with and have been able to stuff in the pouches! I have come to the realization that whatever I could come up with would pale in comparison!

That said, I decided to throw together a bit of a kit that might keep one partially sane during social situations, boring neighborhood get togethers, in-law visits, etc!

This kit will allow the user to sneak off and hide in an out of the way closet, broom closet, cubby hole, crawl space, back porch, tool shed, etc. It also provides the bare minimums if one was to dash away from a social event and get lost while hoofing it back home!

Most of the contents are self explanatory and have multiple uses!

Creeks 220 northeast of me.  I'll see if I can get him on board as official videographer.  I don't think he can participate.  If he sleeps on the ground we'll need to medevac him the next morning.

There's an area on the French Broad outside of Hot Springs that I scoped out this winter that looks awesome.  And my property would work if we have enough rain for running water in the creek.  And If you have any thoughts, I'm open to suggestions.

Being a coward, I'll pass on the white water section but we can definitely get in some time on river if you want.  Or there is always Fontana, the AT hikers should well north by then.  More options around here than you can shake a stick at.

Ok.. Heres my kit.  Its missing two things that I need to get yet.  1. a Firesteel and 2. a mini flashlight. :)

Here it is all snapped up tight.  Put ner had to sit on it to get it to snap. :)

Here it is opened up.   Now some details.  I have a needle that has an eye big enough for the fishing string to be threaded through on the tag.  Pins below on the tag. And I took the stitiching out of the side of the tag to insert the firesteel when I get it.  Right now theres strike anywhere matches in there to show the opening.

Here is everything pulled out.   A roll of plastic thats 4' x 10' for shelter, rain protection, or hauling water.  A roll of Tulle big enough to wrap around a head for mostquito protection, making a net for frogs/minnows/bait or packing with snow to slowly melt and drip, or a boil bag. Twist ties around it for helping to make the above items.  A handywash washcloth and a small chunk of dial soap wrapped in tinfoil.  Two nice sized pieces of tinfoil for cooking rolled up and shoved in the back pocket of the pack. ( you did see the pocket back there right?)  A pill bottle with duct tape on the outside, 2 alchohol pads, PJCBs in a small baggy and room for the mini lighter.   And the altoids tin.

Next is the altoids tin packed.

Inside the altoids tin.   A multi tool.  Two sticks of gum, two candies, one hawiian punch (just in case the water tastes horrible) a coffee filter, a sewing bobbin with wire, the soap chunk, the washcloth (wich has been moved to the outside of the altoids tin) bullion cubes for either drinking or scraping for salt factor on prey caught, a fishing kit with a bobbin wrapped with fireline (remember the needle?)  This fireline is also planned for use on making the net to sew around a bent stick or to make a tie to tie the net around the face for bug protection.     Both washcloth or coffee filter can be used over the mouth for breathing filter.

There.. I think I have alot of the neccessities covered..?   Other than the two items I still need to get.  I did see a small flashlight at Caseys and I'll try to purchase that soon.

WW.

Great looking kit WW!

I really like the idea of storage behind the tag. That is getting every usable inch of the pouch. I would think of tethering the firesteel so it don't get lost. For the contest I would leave it untether though.

OK.....After seeing the first few pouches done up I knew I had been beaten to the punch, there was no sense in trying to replicate the already great pouches that had come before me so I needed to come up with something that had not yet been thought of. Now granted I have included a couple items which have been used before, but my main item of sustenance has not yet been seen.

Also, I figured that Max will be dressed for the weather and so ( because of limited space ) decided not to include any items that one might wear. I am also assuming that the survival scenario is a short one 1-3 days kinda thing.

The first pick shows the contents completely enclosed in the pouch...

this 2nd pic shows contents in the opened pouch...

3rd pic shows all 7 items on table...strike anywhere matches in container, small amount of duct tape, magnifying glass with built in mini light, small bottle of water purifying pills, Jerky rolled up, whistle and knife.

And lastly the mystery item opened up...13 pieces of Jerky
(http://i1207.photobucket.com/albums/bb466/finigin/contentswithjerkyunwrapped_zps288849b9.jpg)

I have not yet found a ss cup to add ( as others have ) but I will attempt to get one and show it with the kit by contest close. Now the idea behind the Jerky is a, it had not yet been done. and b, the psychological boost of knowing you have some kind of comfort food you can eat immediately ( if needed ) while you go about getting some fire/water and shelter ready.

OK.  Wow guys.  Just blown away by all of your creativity.  I'm amazed at what y'all have fit into those itty bitty pouches.

I laughed at the gum and vodka.  Great ideas!  Not kidding.  A little frivolous comfort is greatly appreciated when you're feeling sorry for yourself (and you will) out there surviving.

Jerky. Mmmmmmm. :)

Greyhound?  What do you mean by tethering?  To the pouch itself or striker/firesteel together?

Thanks guys for the compliments. :)    This was hard thinking.   And I'm still re-thinking on it.

WW.

This is so you don't lose the firesteel.

To tie the firesteel to the pouch with a small cord. Some firesteels have a plastic handle with a hole that could be used or if no hole you could use varies ways to secure a cord to the firesteel. Taping, whipping, copper pipe or a 22 shell crimped on the end with a hole drill in it.

On the other end of the cord tie a small loop knot, bowline or overhand knot with a loop, and slide the loop on one of the molle straps of the pouch.

ahh yes!   Good idea.  I'm sorry I just didnt understand.    I see it now , putting just the steel behind that tag , I'd be loosing it in no time.  :(     Thanks Greyhound I appreciate it.

Hey now.. theres some serious thought behind that gum...    :P

McGyver used it for many things.  Gum and wrapper.

But.. gum is good for staving off hunger pains.   If its a peppermint flavor it helps with calming down stomach aches.   And if you have troubles with sugars it will kick in the thought of eating and help with that too. ( doc told me that).

ANd I have to agree..  that beef jerky looks delish!

I thought I heard somewhere that gum can make you hungrier. I heard it tricks your stomach into thinking it's getting food (juices and whatnot from gum), so the acid starts churning preparing for the food that never comes... This would make you more hungry and have excess acid.

I could be wrong, though...

mmmmm. jerky...

great kits so far. I will see if
I can get mine done real quick. I think I have the necessary items I planned to include all at the house now finally.

Ok, finally got a chance to put one together. Though I am sad to say I neglected to include any first aid or chemical water purifying tablets. :(

The contents are:

A cut down beer bottle. This was one of the thick aluminum bottles, thicker than a can. I sanded the rim so it won't snag on the pouch or be uncomfortable to drink from. Can be used for cooking and drinking, and collecting water from seeps or vines, among other things. A bit on the small side for boiling water for purification purposes, but it is better than nothing.

A slow cooker liner bag. This bag holds a few quarts, and is heat resistant so it can be used to boil in. Best way to use it would be to fashion a frame of sticks to hold it open and use the rock boiling method. Can be used for storage, transport, and purification of water, as well as cooking.

Wenger Swiss Army Backpacker. Saw, large and small blades, can opener, screwdriver, awl and corkscrew.

1/4"x3" ferro rod wrapped with 18' of braided polypropylene cordage. Not as strong as paracord but it is tough stuff and it fits.

Mini bic lighter.

Mini liquid filled compass.

Small "cord end" whistle.

Book of matches in zipper storage bag.

Chicken and beef bouillon cubes in sandwich bag.

Capsule with snare/utility wire (can make bail for pot or snares, etc.) on spool, fishing line (spider wire) on spool, split shot sinkers, perch hooks wrapped in tape, snap swivels, needles, and small bit of jute for tinder. Jute could be soaked in bouillon to make a fish attractant (possibly).

Tea light candle.

Well, This really was a Challenge for me. I just kept down sizing all the stuff I wanted in the kit.

Here it is closed.

Here are the altoids contents.
Cotton pads, small magnesium ferro rod fire starter, Peanut lighter, (The fluid has been in there a solid 2 years and it still lit right up.), 50 ft of mechanics wire .040 ga. Plastic vial with fish lure bell sinker and 3 split shots.12 foot leader 30lbs test., a bar of soap and three dehydrated compressed towels. a fourth in the pouch. I have a magnetized needle too it's sitting on a stack of neodymium magnets overnight so not pictured.

all inside the tin

Out side the tin is a poncho, Gerber paraframe, small bottle of purell hand sanitizer, A signal mirror, 3 band aides, Spool of dental floss, a small ziplock with salt and pepper. I guess I could put the mirror inside the tin and maybe add cordage to the pouch?

OK...so when this went up, I thought "hey cool!  This can be fun and I have a kit already made that will fit right in there!"

Well...yeah, I think I still own that kit...but I sure as hell can't find it!

So, I got this tossed together tonight (amidst kids, school, work, visitors, neighbor kids, looming deadlines, wife re-arranging the house...still, and trying to get a pile of parts replaced on my Suburban so I can pass the state safety inspection and get it registered.

So...hopefully the time has not fallen yet!  'Cuz here is what I got foraged together...

Yes, it is snapped shut:

...and yes, it is stuffed!

Contents:
Pouch, tin can container, ramen soup mix for salts and flavor, hot sauce 'cus survival doesn't need to be suffering...besides, Cholula can make cockroaches taste good.  Followed by some powdered lemonade mix: this is Crystal Light because it is what I have.  It should be a not-sugar-free brand IMHO...but this is the sport mix with Gator-aide like stuff in it.
Next is a small glass jar (yes glass...thick mustard bottle glass that can be knapped into a point or blade if need be) with a inner tube band to cushion it.  Inside resides a pile of small treble hooks for fishing or snares.  (hey, in a survival situation, hooks on a snare is definitely NOT cheating!) It has about 50 feet of 10 lb fishing line wrapped around the neck like a hobo reel and another band to secure it.  Inside are also iodine tabs and vaseline-soaked cotton balls.
Under that is a big safety pin...for things that one would need a safety pin for: closing large, gushing wounds, as a closure on a tattered jacket that was ripped up to use as a snake-bite tourniquet, or just fer pickin yer teech after chowin' a barbacoa'ed gator...or a cockroach and worm salad.
Next is a roll of orange line...about 40 feet.  Or maybe 20, I really don't remember.  I was going to use a roll of 25' of cat5 cable, which had four twisted pairs of solid copper wire for about 200 feet of line total....but I can't find my thrashed cat5 cable...it's in my other survival kit.
Then there are a couple of inner-tube rubber lines, because I can...they fit.
THe barlow style knife was a last-minute choice...my BSA knife would not fit.  Thought it would have been appropriately punny (be prepared!) but oh well.  I did need to include something robust enough to really use, so I went with the barlow over my SAK's as it is a bit tougher, sharper and both blades are fully usable as well as it is easier to hold on to and doesn't snap shut as easy.  ...and my good little lock-blade is in my work pants and I'm too tired to go fetch it.
Alcohol pads, MRE matches and a Air Force survival spark striker are next.  Also is one of my cartridge shell tinder matches with a band to hold it together.  The white plastic bundle is the cotton balls that fist in the glass mustard jar.
Last is a bottlecap.  Yup, a bottle cap.  My son and I found out it makes pretty decent shavings for tinder bundles on soft wood and dry inner bark...with a much lower chance of cutting one's self.  Plus you have a bottlecap if you find a bottle that needs capping...or an eye patch, or a bow-drill socket, or a tooth pick for missing teeth, or a thimble for field-made sewing needles, or bait for a racoon trap, a tiny soup bowl, tie a stick to it for a spoon...or about anything else one can think of.

There are still a few folks who haven't gotten their kits posted yet.

No need for anyone to rush, we are looking at a late spring date for this.  It's still wintery in the North Carolina mountains.  I had a foot of snow last week.

As to two of B & B's finest, Max for sure.

I still have some pouches that I will mail out for the cost of postage if anyone else wants to join in.

Great kits guys. As a BnB noob I'm not eligible for the competition, but since I use a MOLLE grenade pouch to carry my PSK here it is (again ;) ):

Note that my pouch has been modded with an additional snap on the front, allowing me to carry a transpiration bag folded up under the Otterbox. Oh, and since I don't like camo belt pouches, it's been hit with some OD spray paint which has half worn off over the years. Apart from that, it's a stock standard SDS MOLLE II grenade pouch in Woodland Camouflage Cordura.

Wow, Great looking kit Buzzacott! I like the idea of of the extra snap to extend the pouch to allow the otterbox. The otterbox keeps the kit dry and organized.

You haven't missed it.

We are going to run this until everyone who wants to participate has a chance (within reason).

Why rush it when everyone is having so much fun?

WB, Our new puppy ate mine. Old cliche I know but it's true. The fishing leaders only have the snap swivels left. I'm not sure which dog might have swallowed the cables. It's been a couple weeks and they seem fine.

So can we dismiss my previous entry? If I won I don't think I have the same contents now or the ambition to redo it the same.

Here they are, can you tell which is the 5 month old? 1/2 Great Dane/ 1/2 Rottweiler-Xena and Rhodesian Ridgeback- Julia. They look soooo innocent...

I'm guessing your going to need a bigger couch for Xena (on the left?) 1/2 Great Dane and 1/2 Rotti.  Both your girls are very pretty.  We went through the puppy chewing phase with my dog a few years ago, it'll pass, just like the contents of your pouch did  ;)

If you want another pouch shoot me a PM.

All I can say is WOW! I am really amazed at the creativity and thought that you all have put into these. I am really impressed folks! You guys rock, can't wait to see the winners in use. All I have ever had stuffed in my grenade pouches are compasses and, well, grenades. I really didn't think they could fit so much.

I especially love all the little pots that are coming up. For those who used an aluminum bottle for theirs, are they just cut down energy drink bottles? Or something a little thicker?

I think you all have stumbled onto a new survival kit staple that just might rival the "altoids tin kits" in popularity in the near future!

As  noob, I just found this thread, and went thru all the entries......and I gotta say, very creative stuff.
Thanks.

Would like to see the method used for SS bottle cut down as a pot, from some one....very cool.

I guess all minds work alike, as I have been using a similar pouch, GI first aid type for a lot of years....but like the smaller one.

Good stuff guys/gals

I enjoyed looking at everybody's entry I was thinking about putting a kit in but there is one entry in particular that is almost identical to the one I wanted to put together so I decided not to put in a survival pouch that was already entered...  Good luck to all the entries!

I believe I owe someone a prize. If that person could PM me with an address I will get this out as soon as I am able.

I am very, very glad this continued on in my absence. I owe it to the wonderful members of this forum, but especially to Wilderbeast and PW (and Madmax for being the crazy bugger to use the winning kit). I haven't gone through the forum yet to see if the trip went as planned and if it went well. In fact, this has been my first stop on the forum. I feel dreadful for disappearing, but.. C'est la vie.

And, it's nice to have interwebs again. Long story, won't get into it publicly.
