Title: What deals have you gotten at yard sales - thrift shops.
Post by: greyhound352 on January 30, 2014, 05:04:10 PM
Just a thread to share the deals you have purchased at garage sales, thrift shops or just stumbled across.

I think it will be neat to see everybody's second hand treasures.

   NICE find!

I have a few things I have picked up in the past, but not lately. And many times I am one of them who is "a day late or a dollar short". I hear about a deal & rush over there & someone has made off with it right before I get there, or I watch them buy it as I am walking up. Happens all the time. Makes for a Love/Hate relationship for me in regard to shopping at places like ya mentioned.. Occasionally I can find a good deal though & that's the Love part.
 ;)

But this is a good idea for a topic.I thought there may have been a topic already made that was along the lines of this one, but I didn't find it. Just thought I would check for ya so there was not competition between them.

Thanks for opening the topic! It'll likely be another that we drool over someone else good luck!
 :D

Nice find, greyhound!

Here's an axe I just mentioned that I picked up for 5 bucks at a flee market in Turo, Nova Scotia:

Great find KK on that axe.

JB I thought there was a thread also like this but couldn't find it.

I'll probably be drooling over some peoples finds also.

Cool stuff!  I never seem to find good deals, either.  I, too, am always a day late or a dollar short.

Here is the other (at least one of the other) yard sale find threads.  Maybe a mod could merge them?

In the early Fall, there was a flea market here called "The World's Largest Yardsale." I got a 20+ year old Mora #1 for $14. He wanted $20 and we haggled a bit (I'm not very good at it.) The knife was from the pre-Morakniv amalgamation days but was not a Jonsson, Frosts, nor KJ Eriksson. I can't remember off hand the name. The stock is thicker than a Frosts #1 and the back of the blade is very square. The red handle is standard and has the ring peened to the bottom of the stick tang. The belt loop of the sheath was broken so I drilled two holes in it and made a simple dangler from a leather thong.

Some years ago, I ran into a phenomenal deal on Dexter-Russell "packing house knives" at a local Goodwill Store.  After the beef processor's order had gone into the supplier, the government came out with new regulations regarding the commercial use of wooden-handled knives.  It was mandated that they all had to change over to plastic.  It was too late to do anything, so the packer just let the order come in, since they had already been shipped.

The processor just decided to write off the expense and gave the knives to charitable organizations.  I arrived on the scene, just as the knives came onto the floor of the Goodwill Store.  They had two boxes about the size of those used to ship washers & dryers FULL of skinners, boning knives, steak cutting knives and smooth (non-striated) butcher's steels.  The knives were $1.50 apiece and the steels went for $2.00....needless to say, I loaded up on several lifetimes worth of great tools at bargain-basement prices!

A sad story.

I've been wanting to find some of these for some time now.

I found them about 3 weeks ago, the exact set I wanted. I had no money, returned in two days, and they were gone. They probably sat there for a year prior. >:(

Probably the best deal I've ever found was an MSR Whisperlite International for 4 bucks at the Salvation Army several years ago. It still had the sticker on the burner.

Been a while since this thread had some love...
I've been picking up camp stoves for stupid from time to time.  I think the most I've paid was 7 bucks for a Coleman Deluxe (old style flat green, not the newer wrinkle finish) propane with an extension hose.
Spent too much on a white gas stove...35 bucks, but it was like brand new and burns great.

Always on the lookout for blankets.  Got a couple nice poly ones for 2 bucks each.  various messkits and parts for a buck or so each.  Still on the hunt for a good butcher knife, but no luck yet.

found this old butcher knife someone made from an old file.
the fella "didn't have change" for my purchase so asked me to take out the difference in goods.  Went rummaging though an old stack of kitchen knives when I saw this:

the tip was heavily corroded and nicked.
the file grooves can still be seen on the spine.

Beau's SAK Farmer, mint, $10 at a neighbour's yard sale. I actually only paid what I had in my pocket - $8.25. Good deal, I'd say. SHe had some Old Timers but they were a little $$$.

Sorry for the crappy pics - photobucket did that. :pissed:

Well , truth be told I really bought it for a spare pair of batteries to go with this box that I got 70% off as well .

The cheaper set had all the driver/screw/drill bits included but the smaller batteries :(
The bigger driver set had the bigger batteries but no drivers or bits but it was still "cough" 70% off at the checkout ;)
I also got the cordless circsaw to go with for 34$ .
Got a cheap 229$ table saw for 65$ , a 589$ compressor for 169$ and several rolls of SOW 12/3 and a roll of 10/3 for cheap .
I guess Yeoman was sleeping in that day LOL
Oh , and I got 3 new 18v dewalt xpr batteries for 0$ ....

Dancan- I almost want to say "you suck!", but I won't!  I've seen those DeWalt batteries go for $90 when the supplies get low around here.  I can't afford that, so I've relegated myself to getting the rebuild kits for $45 off Amazon when one dies.  It's really too bad, because there's normally only one cell that shorts or burns the bridge out.  If I had a spot welder, I'd go for getting the individual cells and rebuild them all myself!

You certainly hit a gold mine by my local area standards!!

I will have to say my boys found an awesome score for my last birthday at a habitat for humanity thrift store.  They got a 3000W Central Electric generator $150.  It was a used at one of their build sites as a backup, and only had 1.5 hours on the meter.  It's enough to run the fridge, deep freeze and some lights or a small space heater, but no 240v outlet.  Good enough to get through a storm and keep the food good  :)

Not from a thrift store but on a clearance rack at Walmart and mislabeled. I do want to support the local college since the tag said "USF beanie".

It is a cheap self inflating mattress. Rolled up it measures 5x24. Layed out it measures 1x24x72 inches.
For the low price of $8.47

I generally don't go to garage sales, flea market once in a coons age. I did take a load of scrap to a junk yard and found a big sawmill blade. The guy at the office said to throw in on the truck when I leave because they weigh the truck coming in and going. So I did and also found a big hand operated forge blower.

Yesterday I picked up a 2# Hults Bruks hachet for $10 at a flea market, I need to re-hang it on a boys axe handle as I already have a 1 1/4# Hults Bruks hachet I bought for $2 a few months ago.

While in the Valley this past week I bought an old rusted hoof knife with a straight antler handle thinking it was a cheap hoof knife with someone's homemade handle; after some aggressive grinding of the rust I discovered it was an English  George Wostenholm hoof knife!  George Wostenholm supplied the HBC which had the I?XL trademark, so I don't know how old mine is. I bought it for only $4.

Post by: wolfy on August 04, 2014, 10:01:12 PM
Are you sure it's a 'hoof knife?'       Wostenholm made lots of right and left-handed crooked, or 'canoe knives' for trade out of the HBC.  Most, if not all of them, were sold without handles to save space in shipment, via canoe brigades to the outlying HBC posts in the Ungava and throughout the Hudson's Bay region.  Only after purchase by the native population, were they attached to handles that each customer fitted to his liking.
Title: Re: What deals have you gotten at yard sales - thrift shops.
Post by: OhCanada on August 05, 2014, 02:37:15 AM
Crooked knives in NS also come in straight blades with the handle being crooked, I have one made by a local from Yarmouth. This is a straight handle antler handle like many Wostenholm shown online so it might be a later one but you are correct in that many metal tools were shipped to the new world (or the land of trees) without handles to both save space and production cost/time. Mine also has the two brass pins as shown in all the Google pics for Wostenholm, the natives around here used wood handles and cord wrap and not pins.

In the Valley we have areas going back to 1600s with the French and English so there is a lot of history here.

First is Native Yarmouth crooked knife vs. hoof knife.
Second is Hults Bruks hachets with 1 1/4# head and 2# head. 2# to be hanged on either a 28" or 21" handle.

Picked up a Brand New Singer sewing machine model 1507, with the manual and cover for $15. I had to get a power cord that the previous owner lost. $20 on e-bay. I had to clean and lube the bottom spool mechanics. The top thread kept getting stuck down inside. Now it sews great. I have experimented a lot with the stitch length and tension knobs with the zig zag stitch mode. I'm very happy with how easy it is to use. So many projects added to the list now. I want to make my own tipi from bedsheets home silicone treated.

Most of our Canadian thrift stores suck, now admittedly I am not in them a lot but I have only come across some really good stuff once, I know a women who does work in one and she says that the workers have lists of stuff to not put out usually this is because one of the workers wants to buy it first ( they get a discount ) so I am pretty sure this probably happens at most stores, and considering the goods are dropped off for free its kinda a bummer that the stuff gets picked over before you even walk in the store.

Rant off... >:D

There are a couple stores in the area - not quite thrift stores but sorta like mom & pop Big Lots. They carry close outs, manufacturer seconds and such. They seldom have the same stuff twice. Sometimes they have military surplus. I was in a couple days ago and scored some good stuff.

Found this Esbit stove - $2.99 marked down to $2. It had a package of Triox inside. They only had one.

Got a few Swiss alcohol gel stoves that were $4.99 marked down to $3.50. They work with the Swiss volcano canteen stove. I already had the volcano stove. Also got a Czech mess kit for $6 - had been marked $9.99.

The small pot nests inside the larger one. The lid fits the larger, can be flipped over to fit the smaller, or can be used as a plate.

No pics but got a British compression bag like new marked down from $9.99 to $7.49. Got some wool gloves, a couple small rubberized bags, and a few other misc. items.

My friend went to an auction last week.  I went somewhere else.  He came home with:

WOOBIE

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poncho_liner

First use of a Woobie I know of was Kenny's Security Blanket  in the movie Mr. Mom, 1983
Quote>
[Trying to get Kenny to give up his security blanket]

Jack Butler: I understand that you little guys start out with your woobies and you think they're great... and they are, they are terrific. But pretty soon, a woobie isn't enough. You're out on the street trying to score an electric blanket, or maybe a quilt. And the next thing you know, you're strung out on bedspreads Ken. That's serious.
<Quote

I gonna guess  this has morphed in to todays use as anything meaning warming, security, or comforting....Hence the poncho liner.

Flea market in town today and since we were going in to pick up a check for some things that were consigned at the local gunshop I stopped by.

I got the following from one vendor.  Three packs of Wonder Lube BP revolver wads, 4 tins of percussion caps (2 no. 10 and 2 no.11) a box of .454 round balls and a box of .451 round balls, and a one pound bottle of Pyrodex 3F.  (I don't use Pyrodex any more but 3f will shoot in a BP revolver just fine and for what it cost I will use it).  All for $25.00.

Pretty reasonable price for what you say. At least that is the way I am thinking anyway. I reload & although not in the market for supplies lately... That is a good deal from my side of the river.

The absolute best deal I have gotten in a long time was a couple of weeks ago at a Bushcraft meet that we held at an area State Forrest,  there were about 25 more or less people attending and as usual we had a trade blanket set up,  a new member was setting some stuff on the blanket so I wondered over to take a look,  he had some mics. items and two vintage '70's era Coleman fuel two burner stoves.
I love those old Coleman stoves and lanterns,  I asked him if they worked ok,  he said he didn't know, he bought them at a flee market figuring if one worked he'd have the other for parts,  but he never got around to trying to light them,  I asked what he wanted for them and he asked if I could use them,  I told him that I have a few and use them allot,  but that I liked working on them rescuing the vintage ones.
So he says,  if you can use them, take 'em,  I offered to pay for them and he refused, he said I was doing him a favor by taking them, he said "When I left the house this morning my wife told me that what ever I do, don't come home with those old things".
I guess I don't have to say that I didn't mind helping him out at all,  a few days later I dragged them out of the truck and gave them a try,  one lighted right up and worked like new,  the other had a problem,  after cleaning and oiling the pump parts and checking the tank pressure,  I took the generator apart and cleaned out the tube and spring, and used a torch tip cleaner to ream out the hole in the brass generator tip and that did the trick,  it fired right up and worked great.
One of them is in very nice shape,  the older one by a couple of years needs some sanding and paint,  but will be a nice little winter project.

I guess you can't beat "for free" Moe.  That was a great deal.

Thanks Stan,  you're right there,  but I believe that when you do something nice for someone it usually comes back to you in some way,  I've been paring down a lot of my stuff for a while,  while some of it is worth a few bucks it's usually easier to gift it to someone who can use it and in some cases can't afford it.
A few weeks ago while cleaning up in my basement I ran across my Browning compound hunting bow, I bought it just before Browning got out of the bow business,  I didn't get to use it much after pulling a muscle in my shoulder,  it was in a new hard bow case with sights, quiver, and 18 new arrows,  one of my sons is a bow hunter so I gave it to him.
I don't intend on doing any more tent camping,  but I have a nice baker tent by Panther Primitives, and a big Museum Wedge by The Tentsmith in NH. with a bell on the back that's like new,  along with some other camp gear that I'm not using,  another of my sons is into Civil War reenacting,  so I stopped in to see him and told him to pick the stuff up,  while there I spotted an old Grumman aluminum canoe in back of his house,  he said he had just got it back from his ex,  it had been at their place on a lake.
He said he hadn't used it in a long time, I told him if he ever wanted to sell it to let me know, I have been looking for another canoe for a while,  he said if I wanted it to take it,  call it an even swap for the tents,  if he needed it he could always borrow it from the old man.
So now I have a decent canoe to clean up over the winter that will be ready for spring,  things do have a way of coming back to you when you help others once in a while.

Machete with 12" blade is marked "Ontario U. S."

Fiskars hatchet 15" in length

Old butcher has no markings, peened rivets, 7" blade

$7.50 I think

My wife got this one for me this weekend and I was initially underwhelmed. Knife was dirty, has plastic finger guard, rubber scaled, dirty nylon sheath, etc. when I cleaned it up a bit, I realized it is a Gerber Watson-Harsey Silver Trident.

Probably not something I'd buy on Amazon for $157, but for $5 .... Not too shabby

Yeah, I know how lucky I was. I consider myself a wool fanatic and own a few point blankets already. I actually had to think twice about buying it because I already have many others that never see use but as a fanatic, you can't say no.

I also picked up an English made, queen sized, 100% merino wool blanket at a church rummage sale last year for $4. It is pristine and so soft it makes a Hudson's Bay blanket look like a horse blanket. I wish I had some sewing skills because I would love to be able to re-purpose them into garments and other things I would use daily.

Im not a big Coleman Lantern guy but I bought two functioning lanterns at a yard sale for $5.00 each.  One of them was the Red Ted, the Ted Williams model from the 60's made of stainless steel. They sell on eBay for about $100-$150.

The Red Ted is a double mantle lantern with a red top and polished stainless tank and frame.  I also have a red Model 200 which is a single mantle lantern with red top and tank.  I know what you mean about the globes, though.  I bought a Dietz original USA Kerosene wick lantern with an original red glass globe on eBay.  It arrived a week late and the globe was broken.  Being that is was standard shipped by eBay, it had no insurance.  I had to spend the cost of the lantern to buy and ship a modern reproduction.  I was not amused.

Well hit the antique stores today, the wife was looking for some vintage crystal knobs that weren't found. I did happen to find a few things of interest. Not a bad way to spend $38 bucks.

(http://s5.postimg.org/rap7b0807/goodies1.jpg) (http://postimage.org/)

I did manage to get some Awesome books.
        1. Griswold cast collectibles - history and value. Second printing 1986. $4.00
        2. Leatherwork manual - Tandy Leather Company. copyright 1969 $4.00
        3. Pratical Black-Smithing - compiled and edited by M.T. Richardson. 1978. $5

The canvas backpack measures 15x15x6 inches and needs some leather strap replacements. The pack had a few goodies inside of it; camo stocking cap, green pouch and two cheap web belts. $25

That book had me talking with the owners of the store and it was the wife's fathers book. I told them I was interested in blacksmithing someday and always looking to gather some of the materials especially an anvil. Long story short I might be getting my hands on an anvil with some history. He does know they have a RR track anvil that he would sell cheap if he could get it back from his brother. Fingers crossed!

Creek, is that a Kellogg?  If it is, it looks almost exactly like the one we had at the farm.  Party lines, BAD pole & line maintenance, rubbernecking neighbors, zero privacy and more, made trying to communicate with the old relic nearly futile.  We had no options until around 1962 when I was in the 8th grade & the dial system became available to rural areas.

Could you possibly take some close-ups of the reciever and hand piece......maybe a couple more detail shots?  Great memories!  Thanks!

Does it still have the working parts inside? Those generators could give a pretty good shock if ya turn the crank & have a short somehow. If I recall correctly, long time ago, I heard a guy say you can use them to fire off a charge. if ya know what I mean. Don't know if that works, but it sounds feasible. Maybe for getting rid of stumps, or setting off fireworks?  LOL

Anyway... Pretty good decoration on the wall!

Today at the local railroad/truck salvage store I got a shaving mug, soap, boar brush, and brush/razor stand for $6.00.  My old Gillette safety razor fits right in.

That frees up my other boar brush so I can break the handle and take the boar bristles out and epoxy a few of them into a drilled deer antler to use as a brush for my flintlock.

Made in Amer'ca. No sheath but I can take care of that.

No idea what this is ... The spine is about 1/8" at the handle and tapers to 1/16" at the "tip".

Thanks, wolfy! Good info on that link. I surfed a bit but didn't find much info. I'm not crazy about that guard but I'm going to clean & polish up the knife and make a sheath for it.

That's very possible on the second blade. It is well made. Handle is solid but it has an industrial feel to it ... Like a trowel or something. The cutting edge is bent but I might work on it or mod it. If not, I'm out a dollar!

Yeah, the guy that designed the guards must have cut his finger pretty badly ONCE and wanted to make certain that it NEVER happened again!    As I recall, ALL of their knives had pretty oversized guards on them........3 different designs, if I remember correctly.

I don't think it counts quite so much when you are giving to your kids, Moe.

Just imagine the jubilee you could have secured if you had given me those tents, heck just one even. There's no telling what may have been, but I bet it would have been truly amazing, probably cedar but I'm guessing. Gotta say you really did blow that chance mmm mmm mmm, what a shame.

Picked up this Singer sewing machine this morning with table, and other sewing nick nacks. The book is dated 1969 and it has a metal body.

Not bad for $25, now to figure it out and start making some gear.

I went to the MEC swap today which is a Canadian chain of outdoor stores which sells off their returned items once or twice a year. Normally there are seam or zipper issues with clothing or breaks on gear but sometimes it is just customer satisfaction issues.

So I got a Fenix E25 for $15 that retails for $41 plus tax in their store. The tag said, "Brand new, just needs new batteries".

Now I have two other Fenix lights from a pawn shop so here is a rundown on all three now.

Fenix LD02: a single AAA flashlight (I love single cell lights) that has three brighness settings and really floods a room with no spot issues. Small and light, no reason not to carry one.

Fenix E12: a single AA flashlight, basically a AA version of the above except> the end button is ressesed, goes from low/med/high while the LD02 oddly goes from med/high/low, and this one has a wrist lanyard rather than the aboves pocket clip. A great light that is a bit bigger due to the AA cell.

Fenix E25: along with using 2 AA it differs in many ways from the above two. This is a longer reaching spot light that is not as good at close room filling light as the 2 above, It also has a more traditional side button switch which takes getting used to after all the tactical end cap lights I am used to. It has a longer reflector which gives it the spot light effect with a more dim light outside of the spot. It is quite longer and heavier than the 2 above, more of a jacket light than a shirt/pants pocket light. 3 settings plus a burst mode that doubles the 130 Lumins to 260 when needed. I have to compare this outdoors to the others but it won't be an EDC around the house/work light.

Overall, when checking the specs, as we go up in battery size we also get an increase in throw and battery life.

Stopped by an estate sale yesterday and saw this vise.  Price then was $50.  Today the price was $37.50.  Tomorrow it would have been $25.  Have you priced a good, made in the USA, machinist's vise lately?  Went ahead and got it today.  Doesn't swivel, but that's never been a big deal for me.  Also picked up a rechargeable 15 million candle power spot light for $20 and a wrist rocket slingshot with new bands and ammo for $2.

You can see why I wanted a new vise!

I'm almost ashamed to post this pics following the pics of Creek's walls....

Found this at an estate sale for $3. It was covered in rust and had a broken handle but it is in decent condition. The poll is only slightly banged up and the bit looks good. No markings on it but I like the shape; I'll re-hang it one of these days.

Here it is after 2 days sitting in vinegar. I wish I had taken a before pic...

Ran by an estate sale here today.  Colt SAA New Frontier .22, 6 inch, original box, both cylinders, made in 1972.  Some very light rust around the sights and on the hammer sides, otherwise in near new condition.  I'll have to see if some Flitz will take care of that hammer.  This thing was fired very, very little.  $350 didn't seem like a bad price at all.  Plus, it's my BD in two days.

While wondering around Duluth, GA the wife was looking at an antique store and I hit up the Duluth Salvage store next door and was able to score 2 pieces of 1/4 amsteel for $2.99 each. One piece is roughly 24 feet and the other is 28 feet. One foot of 1/4 inch amsteel runs 93 cents a foot.
Quite the bargain over 50 feet for $6.34

As you guys know, I find most of my knives at pawn shops.

This week was a Grohmann #3 stainless flat grind with pouch sheath for $25. Sheath was solid, same small belt loop issue everyone has but I have an extra overlap sheath but will likely make a dangler piece for the original sheath. Knife was sold as a second by Grohmann at one point (as shown by the small S opposite the company name), with no chips and only scratches on the blade.

Also a US made Ontario Marine Raider bowie in mint condition for $25; this knife sells for $100 at a local military Surplus shop that doesn't take returns...so buyer must have needed money so off to the pawn shop he went.

The weekend before that I did find 2 mint Imperial fishing knives for $5 each and sold one to a co-worker for the same price.

Not much to report this summer , been busy doing stuff but I did score a few things , I had one of my customers at work give me a Grohmann #3 from the 70's , I'm not sure the reason it was a second because it's nice :)
I did get in a couple of yard sales , bought 30' of unused 6" hd tractor/sawmill flatbelt for 20$ , got a well used but in good shape Mora 510 for pennies in a box lot of hand tools and drill bits and carpentry tools that set me back 12$ , got a nice old but new axe handle for a 2ish lbs axe for 1$ and I picked up this old vise yesterday .

This one is nice , obviously wasn't in a blacksmiths shop ,the thread is sharp , not even beat on the jaws .

I think it's a keeper , all the other used ones that I've seen pop up for sale local are around 250$ .

Plenty of pockets, cuffs in the sleeves, and an old timey hunting pocket ( never used by the looks of it ) on the back, all buttons and snaps intact....SCORE! and only $65  allow me to introduce my new friend.......should be a great addition to the collection and come in handy this fall fishin.

Sorry I'm just seeing your question now woods, the jacket does not say surprisingly but comparing it to other wool jackets I have both 100% and blended I would paint this one at near 100% for the exterior, the liner inside is sort of suede-ish like material.

I picked up a Singer sewing machine  #477 at Goodwill for$25 out the door.  It didn't come with the cover and needs the plastic stem to hold the spool of thread, I  think it's going to be a great machine.

Also picked up a Wagner 9 inch round griddle for $10 at a hole in the wall junk store. The griddle has very mild rust and hope to get cleaned up tomorrow. I didn't get a picture before I started cleaning it.

Hope to get up some pictures tomorrow, Great black Friday deals!

I see a visit to Harbor Freight in your future. ;D    I would suggest a couple of accessories that you'll find yourself needing constantly......an extra 25' of hose, a blowgun attachment and some couplers to allow you to attach and detach wrenches, paint sprayers, the gun and extra hose.  You already know that an extension cord is not the way to go. 8)   We use an 'air pig' to carry air to where the hose won't reach, too......all cheap at HF.

Already have all that stuff, wolfy, and this thing came with 50' of hose so I can easily reach anywhere inside the shed and most anywhere outside I would need it, too.  If I get real energetic, I may run some PVC distribution line with a few quick connects inside and outside the shop.  I've got a little, portable  2 gallon air compressor (oil free, noisy little bastage) that I use for pumping car tires, etc. but it doesn't have enough butt to even operate the spark plug cleaner I have mounted on my work bench.

I assume they fit?

thrift stores locally seem really poor around here, almost like they are culled. I like estate sales, yard, and sometimes flea mkts but often I end up with nifty stuff I dont really need.

I was happy to snag 1 pound of Tremont 1.1/2" headless brads for $18. Approx. $60 + shipping on their website. Not from any of the above but ebay. Around here at least, estate sales have proved to be the best source for the kinds of things we adore.

They are 1 inch to large in the waist but that actually works in my favor for layering purposes. Goodwill, Salvation Army and similar chain thrift stores have caught on to the online auction fad you can still find good deals but its harder. I scored 2 Swiss m39 packs for $36 last year. On goodwill's online site.

Remember at Christmas when I asked for that slipstone? Finally bought one myself, and bidding on another.
Not thrift, tag, yard sale-too much time driving place to place.

Price was not too great, but much better than what you pay at Dan's or many others for novaculite. The best part, this one is a genuine Wash-i-ta yep.(wa(http://bladesandbushcraft.com/Smileys/krystl-white/censored.gif)a gets censored lol) It is an old Norton. Should be fun, since all I have now is a soft JPN synthetic for smalls, a coarse India cone(don't use), and one good synthetic I shaped myself.

That old leg vise needs a spring.  Very easy to make and it really doesn't even need to be heat treated.  I would guess that vise would get $100+ at a flea market.  Nice score!

Thanks for that , I didn't notice but will make one up .

Just picked up over a hundred national geographic maps for five dollars. Makes me very happy. Some will go on the wall in the garage, some I will sell or trade

Heckuva deal!    I remember when NG include those maps in almost every other issue......I pored over them for hours as a kid.    Beautifully prepared charts are a joy to behold!

I picked up 2 Disston hand saws this afternoon for $3 each. I am not sure of manufacture date, but I suspect they are post 1955, so not the collectable Disstons but still decent saws.

If I could get away with it I would hang maps throughout the house, but I am afraid I would hear "damn it Robert its me or the maps". Women they just don't understand

Neat, good score.

Comin' back from a dove hunt/bass trip I stumbled into a long yard sale in Packwood, WA, that was just winding up.  A feller had a display case of cutlery and old doo-dads; he was sportin' a long face--hadn't made much money at the sale and needed gas money to get home.  He had a handle-less Jukes Coulson trade dag blade that carried a $150 tag; when I offered him $40 (which was all I had on me) he sez "do you know what that is?  Nobody else seems to!"  I said I had a notion, but just didn't have any more cash on me--and he sold it to me!  I've since parted with it--for $400 and several other 19th-century trade blades--but I'll never forget the history it told.  It had been sharpened so many times the edges had taken on a concavity to 'em--used fer a double-edged dagger or a lancehead, for decades, probably, back in the buffalo days--but then one edge had been purposely dulled, to make a tamer, more civilized single-edged knife fer kitchen chores after the glory days were gone.  Some brave's big medicine, gone sour.  I've found good bamboo fly rods, a passel of old fly reels, a couple of wicker creels and fair few Collins machetes and axes, but that old Injun relic was the best, by far.
mind yer topknots!

best deal I've ever gotten was a Kelty Redwin 3500 for 10 bucks.  I just lent it out to a buddy for our backpacking trip.  I've been on the lookout for wool blankets and old hickory knives but no luck.
