Title: Bushcraft Girl paddles her beautiful wooden SUP at Dawn
Post by: susannewilliams on July 19, 2014, 07:25:01 AM
We live on the amazing Walchensee. An alpine lake in bavaria with water so clean you can drink it.

Plenty of trip reports from there.....

Great vid and beautiful scenery.  I had the real pleasure of living in Germany for a couple of years and visited Bavaria.  Loved Germany immensely, its a wonderful place.

So what do you do when the wind comes up?

Pleasant video and a really beautiful place.

Interesting craft. I have seen a few stand up paddlers but most were more like a sail board than this one.

I would like to know a bit more about the watercraft if the OP comes back.

Hi, yes I am back... been outdoors a lot of late.

This is a Fanatic Fly Race, in the clear wood edition. It's a special stand up paddleboard for racing, long distance cruising and so on, on lakes and oceans.

I also have a dedicated river SUP and an inflatable that I use for expeditions and all around stuff...

Thank you! It is the only paddleboard I have seen that could do the lake justice.

If it really blows hard you can sit down to reduce you wind profile, or even tack into the wind...

But really you just paddle harder....

15-20 knots is manageable if tedious...

Thanks!

Bavaria is truly amazing. A real hidden gem.

Everyone drives by on the motorway on their way to Italy or Austria...

But that's OK. Nice and quiet here.

Thanks! Yeah most of  my trip reports end up being a bit immersive... glad you liked.

The flute kind of plays itself when it is so beautiful around...

15-20 kts!  I can see sitting down and wrapping my legs around the hull. I can only imagine it would be like riding a head strong horse. Hahahaha.

The trick is in how you angle into the wind. It's surprisingly easier to be upwind a bit more steeply and do a sort of ferrying maneuver.

45degrees plus.

If you are broadside on then the waves and wind will want to send you downwind...

It's a bit like paddling in a river really....

But yeah...it's a PAIN and best avoided...
