Too the Woods with my Son I go
« on: March 25, 2017, 07:45:23 PM »
The weather was going to be nice and my wife and daughter were heading out for a girls morning.  So I grabbed my six-year-old son, some bison sausage and hot chocolate powder.   Off to the woods we went.

The morning was perfect!  The temp -2C (29 F) the snow had a nice crust for easy walking.   Jonathan had never made I fire before, so this was going to be the day.   First, filling our pockets and caps with birch bark.   Grab a few small dead balsam fir and drag them to the spot.   Tinder bundle as big as your head or dead.  A few dead spruce branches and we're ready!

I would like to say it only took one match.  Though he was close, only took eight to light the candle.  From the candle, it only needed a couple of seconds to get the birch bark going.   Then we had to step back because the fire prep was too good.  Almost lost my eyebrows.

He was so proud of himself, I had to send mom pics right away.   After the bison sausage and a couple of cups of hot cocoa.  It was time for home.

It's always better to be in the woods with a child to remind us of the magic.

very cool. Do you have a good ferro rod? Just curious because I know it'll fire up birch easily. I can't say I could have lit the candle outdoors with less than eight matches. Did ya see anything interesting out there? We have a ton of robins out and a huge flock of something, Starlings maybe?

xj35s,

When I make a fire myself.   I usually use my 1/2" x 6" ferro rod.   Birch will light with almost anything.   I've even used a magnifying lens to light birch bark in the summer.

As to seeing anything.   Here in Manitoba, Canada spring is just starting.   There is still a good foot of snow in the woods.   We're still 4 weeks away to things sprouting.   We did see a Bald Eagle sitting in a tree on the way home & a Snow Owl out in a field.   Out course there are ravens and chickadees, with a few red squirrels scolding us on the walk in.  :)
