It seems, One of the defining characteristics of the struggle for independence, and often its impetus, is the desire of its participants to have and maintain a distinct identity. 
The 18th century American separatists did not consider themselves "banned from England"

That's Australia ;)

Haha!  AND Newfoundland... My background's Newfie and I've relatives in Australia!   :D

But I can't help thinking about what you said.  Much of our character comes from what we think about ourselves, how we talk about ourselves, and how we just generally conduct ourselves.  I think your post is really, really important to us all...
