Project Big Knife finally done(ish) LOTSA pics warning...
« on: April 11, 2012, 01:39:09 PM »
So, certain folks spouting about how great their big Beckers are got me wanting a big knife.  Being unemployed with five kids, buying one wasn't gonna happen.

So, one day I find these one sale.  7 bucks plus shipping, I'm looking at this POS..piece of seax...

As you can see, I started stripping the nasty black crap off it already.

The pinky-breaker thingy had to go, so when cutting it off, I discovered a full tang.

So, off on a full rework:

Re-profiled the tip and convexed the edge...

Cord wrapped the handle to play with it...gotta eval the mods...

Next came several months of cussing, dispair and hopeless toil.  I tied a sawzall blade on a stick and did a blind dado by hand in a nice burled chunk of oak.  The way the tang is shaped, I could not do scales without a filler strip which I don't have the tools to make.  So, I got it made, started installing it with tubing as pins...and broke the dangmnanded thing.

So, on a trip to see my folks, we made a new one on Dad's tablesaw and cut the pilot holes on the drill press.  Taxes came in and I picked up a new drill and bits which made the rest possible finally.

Roughing out the holes with a round file...my tubing was slightly bigger than the factory holes in the tang, so I had to open them up.  Smoked two old drill bits (yes, i do know how to drill steel...I needed a reamer or step drill) so it was file territory.  Epoxied the new handle on and drilled the holes for the tubing:

So, here it is.  As an old cabinetmaker, I am not thrilled with the finish work.  I learned NOT to use copper tubing..it's waaayyy too soft to do this way.  But in any case, for what it is and the tools I had to work with, I'm ok with it.

Should be a heck of a chopper!

Will look forward to seeing how you like it in use. Sucks about having to re-handle it but I think it turned out good. Is the handle one piece, or did you inlet two separate scales and glue them together? Is the tang exposed on the bottom side?

Just curious. :)

One-piece block for the handle.  Ran a blind dado on the table saw.  The blade is a hair under 1/8 inch, so a heavy 1/8th kerf left just enough room for some JB Weld.

The tang is exposed on the bottom side.

Thinking about it, I want to do another with a better blade...maybe save up and order a custom blade.

I like the wrap around of wood on the top, so I'm thinking scales with a filler strip, then when installing the copper tubes, have a steel or brass rod inside so they don't deform.  Then when they are in, I need two solid cones to flare the tube and set them in the stock.

Thanks on the comments.  I really do like the copper in there.  Next handle will be more of a golden oak color instead of a cherry stain. Run what ya brung and brung what ya got, eh?

Wow!  That's really cool!  I love projects like that.  It makes me feel great to "re-purpose" (I like that word! :)) something to make something entirely different that you wanted but couldn't get...  (Did that just makes sense? :P)

Any hoo... Go to the front of the class on that one Gryph!

That came out really nice, Gryphon!  I like what you did with the handle.  I bought a CS Khukri machete with the plan of re-handling it.  The drop from the spine to the handle is what had me stuck.  You may have solved my problem.  Thanks for sharing.
Is there such a thing as too many knives?

I had fun with it.  Pop has some really nice exotic woods in his shop.  Going to be looking for some blanks later on to do some more.  This one was mostly for fun and practice.

Thanks!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too, a Hudson Bay.  I really like the new blade you have released from the earlier version, especially the new handle.  That pinky thing just looks weird to me.  Great job!!

I was going for that look.  We'll see how it's received tomorrow...taking the Scouts to a mountain-man themed camp this weekend.  Finishing my shirt today then gotta get the capote done...got the knife done and my 'hawk has been in use for a while now...Scoutmaster got scared by it...I was cutting cordage with it.  He's not seen a chopper that sharp I guess.

I posted pics on their fakebook page.

I was envious of the BK-9...that was the inspiration to do this.  Throw a set of oak scales on yer Becker!

I had a lot of fun (and some cussing) with it.  I get to build a sheath for it next...thats gonna be tough for me, I'm not skilled with leather by any means...but that should be fun too.
