Do any of you carry guns?
« on: February 09, 2015, 10:53:14 AM »
Any time I camp, I carry a 22 LR Ithaca youth lever single shot and I carry my 22 SA revolver. But I've been reading threads, and no one I saw yet Carries a firearm. Is it a weight thing, or do you not like firearms, or do you just not need them?

I carry one with me.  Most of the time it's under a jacket and you can't see it anyways.  I don't do a lot of self pics anyways on my threads.  But I do carry one.

Oh man you should come to a FL Kracaneuner camp.  It's the odd man out that doesn't bring a firearm.  Some are more discreet than others, but eventually there's a show and tell time.  There are dozens of us.

I'm Canadian.
We only carry firearms during hunting season or if in possession of a carry permit for trapping or if working in high risk areas (field biologists, prospectors, some loggers etc).

I do. Sometimes only a pistol and other times a pistol, my tricked out SKS, or a shotgun.

Depends on what I'm doing in the woods, lol.

Most times I (and most people) pack a rifle along since there's a whole lotta bears around here. It doesn't need to be hunting season to carry a rifle or shotgun. We aren't big on foot travel though so size and weight isn't a problem. Most of our travel is done by quad and boat in the summer, and skidoo in the winter.
Carrying a firearm is common even when there's no open hunting season because of the bears.

Oh ok cool. I'd carry my Russian Mosin nagant, but it's like 9-11 pounds, and I really believe in shot placement vs caliber. And I've never seen a bear besides the one I held at a zoo.

Yuppers,  rarely go into the woods without one,  usually a 3" S&W model 60 in .357 mag. loaded with .38spec. 158grn. SWC's,  or a Ruger New Model Single Six .22RF.,  in small game season a 10/22 or an old Savage/Stevens single shot 12ga.,  if the 'Yotes are around I'll tote my Rossi Mod.92 levergun in .375mag.

Most of the times I go to town I carry. I listen to the police scanner a good bit though and realistically in my area violent crime is relatively low. Still, the one time you leave it home...

I don't carry often on short day hikes. But for overnight camping I wouldn't be without one.

I agree that comfort and convenience are important and if it is too big/heavy/uncomfortable you will carry less. A little, less powerful gun is a lot better than no gun at all.

When I'm going through the woods on a nice little Jaunt, especially in an area where there are lots of squirrels and rabbits, I like to carry my CZ 452 bolt action 22. It's ridiculously accurate, very graceful than just a joy to shoot. If I'm going
I will carry a Ruger Mark 1 , 22 LR.
But if I'm out hunting birds or any kind of outdoor activities in wild pig country, I carry a Ruger Blackhawk on my  hip  It's chambered for 45 colt, and I use some very stout CorBon loads for it. For light backpacking if I carry a gun it will be my Henry AR seven

I will say that I rethink the light weight thing when I'm canoeing. Delivers in Oklahoma are rarely very wild. Most are slow and very red colored from the red Soil here
So if canoeing I kind of have luxury of carrying heavy or arms or a wider variety. Cereal here to hunt from a non-powered boat and along the creeks and rivers is a good place to catch a wild pigs squirrels etc. unaware. Lately my go to gun has been a new England firearms single shot 20 gge. I carry some slugs for some number seven

Okcmco....I've decided on one of those CZ .22 Sporters for my 'nice' & accurate squirrel rifle.  Just haven't had the chance to go look at one yet.....now that I'm retired I do, so probably later on this summer I'm going to do some serious shopping. :)

LMAO.  And she probably didn't see the half of it.  Glad she trusts the Tribe to be responsible.

I've never seen a Marlin with a 'white' lever, nose cap loading gate and extractor like that.....or a black bolt, recoil compensator or nose cap/swivel stud like that, for that matter.  Did you buy it from a distributor that did that treatment.....or do it yourself after you bought it?  Looks like a Skinner rear sight, too.....good lowlight combo with quick pointing capability.  I like 'em, too.....nice outfit with a distinctive look!

It's a jm stamped 1895GS I picked up a while back. I sent it out to get s bunch of work done. Had the stock refinished, all metal parts were gunkoted, action tuned, slicked, and moly coated. Trigger job. Barrel cut and muzzle break added.  Overall barrel length 16 ". Stock recoil pad removed an new one added. She shoots awesome one of my favorite guns. That's not a skinner it's a ghost ring. I'm gonna get one for it as I prefer the skinner I have one on my .450

That's kind of the idea, I guess.....but I usually hunt deer in thick woods & brush that get dark really fast when the sun dips below the horizon.  Most of the time I just leave the insert out entirely because ranges are short in that environment.  I do use them for sighting in, but the more I use that huge hole in the ghost ring, the better the groups become in all situations. :)

I have the old Williams peep on my lever action.  I usually take out the aperture and just shoot it naked.  Works well in low light and short ranges as my eyes are kind of old and don't do as well as they used to.  I have tried a Leupold 1.5-5 variable and like it but not as well as the peep sight.

That Marlin is a great looking gun and for areas where there are animals that bite and big ones like Moose it would be very useful.  It is also a great looking gun.

I put a williams peep on my SKS and removed the aperture to make it a ghost ring. I think that's ideal for a close range rifle like the SKS.
