Still not sure what this wood is...
« on: February 09, 2015, 02:37:27 PM »
I love this stuff.  Its from my land, my son harvested it and I was thinking it was some kind of sumac, but several folks here were skeptical.  My buddy Steve believes that it is cedar...  Anyway I made another spoon.

My earlier spoon:

That is a good question. Being from Connecticut originally for 30 years I'm not sure about the cedar but it is definitely a possibility but I think the grain is wrong. My best guess is some kind of poplar or spruce. Do you have a picture of the trees it was harvested from b chance?

I do have a piece with the bark on, I'll post it up soon.  Thank you!

Looking back at some pictures from back in Connecticut it definitely could be a white or red cedar. Any chance of some mice fir tree or spruce?

Can't see much color on the first, the second sure looks like a cedar or juniper.
Does it smell like cedar or juniper?
...don't go thinking you know me.

Can you press your nail into it and make an identation? If you can it is probably juniper or cedar.

I've carved with red cedar and it was a pain as far as chipping out against the grain.  Carved sweetly going the other direction.   I was carving fish decoys.

It sure is pretty wood.   Does it leave an aftertaste if used with something warm like I'd think cedar would?

WW.
On particularly rough days when I'm sure I can't possibly endure, I like to remind myself that my track record for getting through bad days so far is 100% and that's pretty good.

Glad you were able to id the wood. It sure is nice looking. I'll have to keep my eyes open and see if we got some in my neck of the woods.
