Anyone use a Grenland style Kayak paddle?
« on: September 04, 2015, 07:20:38 AM »
Thinking of building my own not much to them and they look relatively simple. But has anyone used one and what's your opinion?

Pretty cool post Jimmy.

During the summer of 92 while I was in Greenland I never saw anybody kayaking in the river of the town where we were. The Sondrestrom Air Base closed shortly after we left, we were doing some environmental cleanup. The town near the base is called Kangerlussuaq.

I do remember sticking my foot in the water and it was just above freezing to this Florida boy.

Those look pretty cool. Would be fun to try one out. I was out fishing a couple of weekends ago and a couple of long sea kayaks came paddling by. They were both using this type of paddle and were using what I thought was a funky, low stroke. They moved along pretty good though.

For touring it is supposed to be lower impact and more efficient. Plus the cool factor of making your own. I need a spare so I figure this would be a cheaper and fun build.

I would guess you could find a better piece of cypress rather than using a 2x4 as suggested.
...don't go thinking you know me.

Sound like a great idea for a spare. Maybe a break-down model using a ferrule of some sort.

That's an idea! There is some beautiful laminated ones I like as well. Gonna build one and get my feet wet first.

Yes I will look for some down wood this fall for sure. I'm headed out in the morning to try and fine a piece of western cedar that's grained right. Mainly due to its weight.

Well I couldn't find a piece of cedar that was any good at either of the box stores in town. But a 12' piece of SPF was found and 4 hours later I had a paddle. A fun project with only a few tools.

I haven't used one, but was passed by a guy using a carbon fiber version while out kayaking recently.

Jimmy I was planning on doing a lay up with some contrasting colors and carving it out of that. Figured as long as I was at it....

Yes I'll post them up sorry weather turned bad and I ment to get them taken yesterday. I'll get some up after lunch.

Danny I definitely will be doing that as well. The first one was really all learning. There is a YouTube video that follows the link above that's great up to the final layout and he rushes over that. Lol after laying that out myself and kind of see why. I really just looked at how they drew the lines and free handed most of it but the blades edge thickness. When you get that far you'll see what I mean. One thing about laying a laminate out just as a reminder from every thing I read is to lay all grain the same direction. And really it should run to the ends. So as your block plane is not tearing out one piece and not the other. There is a wood shop in Orlando that carries all types of wood so after I play with tuneing this one I will know how to build that one to those deminsions

Great paddle in deep water with no weeds.  IMHO they suck for shallow and weeds.

I think that with your strong paddling style I'ld definitely go for a big fat short power blade build.

Unless you like paddling with hydrilla hanging off your blades and tearing them up on oyster beds.

Been there done that.
At least it's not a femur through the pelvis.

Well I'm hoping that this style will help my style slow down and use less than effort. With a smaller blade maybe I won't keep pulling away from everyone and can be more social. I think it will do well in most the areas I go as I have seen many paddlers using them on the same waters I visit. If anything I have a $4.57 spare to tie to my deck with the satisfaction in making it.
