Attention: Calling All the Bullies of Bushcraft
« on: September 25, 2015, 01:03:53 PM »
It is time to plan a fall get together.  Those who are currently bullies and those who think they have what it takes to be a bully are welcome to attend.  O:-)

Date: OPEN but I'm leaning towards the weekend of November 13-15th
Location: To be determined but you guys really need to head my way this time

Just checking for interest before the entire fall gets booked up on my end.

What say you?

Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? One should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, it is much safer to be feared than loved.

I may be "out and about" that weekend. I'll have to figure out my November schedule and look for an opening. Really hoping I can make this one.

And I propose the location be the French Broad River Recreation zone, Paint Creek Corridor.

The closest town is Hot Springs NC and the foliage should be at or close to peak.

Wish I could make this.  :(
I know that area well! Used to live less than an hour away and camped at Paint Creek often.
Unfortunately, 1800 miles is a bit much to drive..
Hope everyone has a great time.

Thank you, you must have been practically a neighbor if you are only an hour away.

It's a great place to spend time outdoors, especially after the tourist season is over.

Likely so Wilderbeast. I lived in the Tri-cities area, just outside of Greeneville, TN.  Really miss floating the French Broad, and stopping at the Mellow Mushroom for a pie on the way home.
Your fall colors should be rockin' soon.

I called the Forest Service office in Greeneville TN to confirm we will have access to the area.  I was told that even if the improved campsites are closed disbursed camping will be OK.

I was going to scout out a few sites but we are having a Rain-pocalypse this weekend.  But I'll get to it as soon as the flood waters recede.

We are back a day early, it started raining and didn't let up.  Didn't seem to make any sense to stay when a $500K prize was not at issue.

Besides creek lost his firesteel and decided to tap out.  And there were bears, lots of bears.

Very pretty area, pictures to follow.

I think this was a bear, not sure because I'm not some animal identification expert.

Petroglyphs from an ancient race circa 4000 B.C. in the USA.  Translated it means roughly "we trademarked the word bushcraft, thanks".

some sort of body of moving water.

another body, this one wasn't moving.

another water fall, the area is lousy with them.

Hope you enjoyed, creek will probably chime in with his own shots.

Nice Pics! Thanx for sharing them!
:)

With rain shortening the trip,is likely a lil bit of a bummer, but I'd bet ya'll had a wonderful time getting together & getting out in the woods!
:)
I love being out in the woods!   I like this quote from Mors Kochanski - "The more you know, the less you carry". I believe in the same creed, & think  "Knowledge & honed skills" are the best things to carry with ya when you're out in the wilds. They're the ultimate "ultralight" gear! ;)

Yep, just the two of us and creeks guard dog Lulu.  A frozen butt camp out sounds like a fine idea.

Cool looking area.  That deer in the second picture looks kind of small though.

I think it was a doe, the picture doesn't give any scale for reference but it was every bit of 9 lbs 8 ounces.

As soon as Creek hit the road, I tried to get a FREE-FOR-ALL going, but I was the ONLY one here! :'(

Makes me recall a quote from JFK at a White House dinner for a bunch of Nobel Laureates "There is more intelligence in this room tonight that at any time in history, with the exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined here alone".

Too bad about the rain, but it looks a very pretty area to be.

You should have seen it a couple of weeks ago when the foliage was at peak.

Was a great time out no matter what. I slept 9 or 10 hours hanging in trees. Can one ask for more. Other than all the bushcraft laws we broke..wouldn't change a thing.

The French Broad is beautiful

Lots of water. Interesting that it flows North.

Paint Creek is a good stream to camp with.

Nice to see big ole rainbow trout in the waters too.

Beautiful country.

Bears....

Our normal digs

Glamping kitchen

A real good time

I believe that is in fact a miniature short haired Canadian Timber wolf on the prowl, they are particularly aggresive and dangerous this time of year. Good thing he didn't attack, you boys are lucky to have made it back home safely...

Possibly. but it behaved much like a dingo.  There was not a baby in the area.  Spooky.
