Overnighter with the Boys 2015
« on: November 21, 2015, 07:58:12 PM »
As some of you may know, the Diogenes Clan is moving to Colorado next month. I wanted to get one last trip in with some of my buddies. We had a blast. Despite some rain the weather was fairly mild; the lowest it got was in the upper 30's. No biggie.

Because we were expecting some rain we went back to the spot with those CCC-built backpacking shelters. A couple of us went out early to gather firewood and clean out the shelter.

We swept it out, got some fallen branches off the roof, and dragged in a big log to sit on.

View from the shelter.

Once the other two arrived (barely before dark) we all threw in for a hobo stew. This one was epic. Here's everything that went in that I can remember:
stewed tomatoes, corn, potatoes, garlic sausage, bratwurst, jalapeno beef jerky, miso soup mix, parsnips, radishes, mushrooms, chicken stock, beer, onions, carrots, mre cheese spread, ramen seasoning (then the noodles later), hot sauce, salami. Believe it or not it was incredible.

While the stew stewed we had a little beer and bourbon, joked, listened to the coyotes, and generally had a great time.

It started raining pretty hard overnight and lasted through mid morning. We retrieved water, got the fire going again and started breakfast. I made a little grilling racket for some breakfast SPAM, something I learned here on B&B. The boys were impressed.

Eventually the rain let up so we packed up, cleaned up and headed back to the cars. The temp was dropping. Apparently it'd snowed a bit back in St. Louis.

We kept seeing a bald eagle. I couldn't get a good shot, though.

Good times.

On the way back, cheeseburgers and beers. I'm gonna miss these guys.

Yes you are going to miss times like that one.  Great report and really neat pictures.  That shelter is a pretty good place to camp when the weather is bad.

Good luck with your move and have a safe trip.

It sounds like we've all been getting together and out with old friends making memories lately.......that's what I like to hear and what getting outdoors is all about!  Great pictures of the old CCC shelter, too.....they must have built a lot of those around the country because we have two of them out at the state park, too.  I love cooking in the fireplaces, too.  Thanks for taking me along! ;D

That's going out in style!  Good times!  Now you can invite them up to Colorado for a taste of the Rockies!

Looks like a great trip. Interesting hobo stew also, sounds like it would be tasty on a cold night.

Love the pics.  Thanks for sharing.
