First Stick Tang Build.
« on: April 29, 2012, 07:25:46 PM »
I picked-up a few different stick tang and rat tail blanks a couple months ago.  I figured it would be fun to try something different.  After checking around the how-to threads, I gathered some components and gave it a go.  The blade is a Mora laminated 4 1/2" blade blank.  Handle is antler, leather, and brass.  I got the antler in a trade a few months back.  It has a few more handles left in it.

Here's the only assembly picture I took.  I get too involved with the build and never remember to take pics.  Here you can see the clamping rig I threw together out of clamps and my jeweler's bench pin (a very useful piece of shop gear).

A close-up of the handle.  I shaped and sanded it to 600 grit.  The leather got a couple soakings of super glue to protect and harden it.  I buffed it with a drill press buffer wheel and plastic polish from Home Depot.

I made a sheath for it as well.  Only leather and brass with a little contact cement to keep it in place for assembly.  I used dark brown dye and Resolene finish from Tandy.

I had fun with one and I can't wait to get on the next one.  I have a Helle and a Mora carving blank left.  I may have to pick up some more in the future.  Thanks for lookin'.
Is there such a thing as too many knives?

Very nice!

I've 'handled' a few Mora blades myself, but none of them look as good as yours!  Outstanding work!

That leather and antler are KILLER, together......looks almost like ivory and it brings out the beauty in both of the materials in combo.  Beautiful work!

That is an impressive piece of work.  Really like the materials and how they go together.  You did a first class job.

Great job on that! I like the combination of materials as well. And I know how easy it is to get immersed in your work and totally forget to take pictures...

I am really excited to see all the nice knives our members are making. I think we have a lot of ability distilled into a small number of people here. I don't remember seeing this many talented craftsmen concentrated in one place before.

Excellent work on both knife and sheath!  I really like the contrast in handle materials.  I'll be curious to know how the superglue treatment holds up over time.
