50 lbs of granulated lye
« on: April 30, 2017, 04:24:57 PM »
I recently ended up with 50 lbs of free lye, just put it in a 5 gallon bucket for safe keeping.  Our office lady started making soap and was buying lye from ebay by the pound. I'm thinking 5 to 6 bucks a pound. Anyhoo one of our suppliers told me they sold lye by the 50 pound bag for 35 dollars. So I told her and she ordered a bag. When the bag came it was all mangled up, looked really terrible, had some spray foam in a crease.  She called them and wanted to exchange it for a nice looking bag of lye. I was talking to one of their salesmen and told them I would buy it from them and he ended up giving it to me.

Not sure what I'll do with 50 pounds of lye but I have already cleared one drain with it.

it's great for de-greasing
making soap
clearing drains
my granddad mixed it with ammonium nitrate and made a hot niter blue for firearms

beats the heck out of those small bottles of drain opening lye at the hardware.

You used to be able to buy cans of lye in every grocery store in the country, but I guess the process of cooking meth uses lye, too.  Guess what?  It is now almost impossible to find lye for those that have legitimate uses for it.  I have no doubt that the meth cookers have found substitutes or other ways of arriving at the same conclusion. :stir:    Keep an eye out for black helicopters, randy!

LOL, there is still a lot of soap makers out there. The same supplier years back gave me some 55 gallon drums. With in these drums there was still about 3 gallons of acetone. I poured it into some big jars and used it up making ed's red. Really need a airtight lid for acetone, it evaporates away otherwise. If I live to be a hundred I'll be one smart feller, I learn this stuff the hard way.

I believe that there are some brands of stump-dissolving chemical that are nothing more than pure lye, also.  Big-box lumber and hardware stores carry it. :coffee:

who's the supplier?
my wife makes soap, too - and that beats the $6 a pound she's been paying hands down!
