basket weave leather stamps
« on: January 22, 2018, 07:29:19 AM »
my question is this,  since there are nearly a dozen sizes
of basket weave stamps for leather tooling.
is there a proper size for such?
or is it all just a matter of choice?
now mind you this is for sheath making application.
or should i just get a small variety of such to get'er done?

I'd say it just a matter of personal aesthetics. Of course you don't want the pattern out of proportion for your item.  There are many different patterns of "weave" which further complicates the decision.

I've survived all these years with only one 1/4" stamp.

You might find this link helpful, especially if you're on a budget. Also the video on this page.

Another tip: If you are able to have eyes-on when picking a stamp, make darned sure it has good, clean patterns in the grind!  Some cheap stamps are ill-defined and your work ends up looking muddy...

Good find!  IMO, the most important thing is having the surface of the leather the right dampness.  Start out lightly sponging the surface and give that a try. If it's too hard, sponge again. Keep testing until you get a feel for the right amount of moisture.  You'll also find you'll need to re-wet the surface every so often.

I just got a new basket weave stamp I am very excited about.  It has the outline of my state (California) in the pattern.

I can't wait to try it out!

that really sounds cool woodsorrel,
I would really like to find some stamps with military insignia
like the USMC globe&anchor and special forces shield the one that goes on
the berets flash. stuff like that, if i ever do a sheath for a vet say.
