DECEMBER 5TH......SINGERKLAAS EVE
« on: December 05, 2018, 05:59:56 PM »
In some of the lower countries like the Netherlands, December 6th is officially Sinterklaas Day, making tonight Sinterklaas Eve.  Sinterklaas is the original saint from whom our Santa Claus was derived, so......

HAPPY SINTERKLAAS DAY , EVERYONE!  :choptree:

Yep, Sinterklaas was a nice national holiday in The Netherlands.
But the last few years it is always a problem.
The official arrival of Sinterklaas on a steamship (each year in a different city), is now with heavy police escort.
This is due to big number of (mostly) black people protesting against the "pieten", the official helpers of Sinterklaas.
They are black, so the protesters claim they are slaves, so it is protesting against slavery.

However....
According to the original story, Sinterklaas really existed. He was made saint by the pope:  Saint Nicolaas = Sint Nikolaas = Sinterklaas), he actually freed some slaves who then stayed with him.  Nationality of the slaves is unknown however. Some say that he freed some women from prostitution.

These days they are black cause they climb down the chimneys to put presents in the shoe's or socks of the kids.
(kids put a carrot for the horse of Sinterklaas or drawings for Sinterklaas in their shoes and if the kids where nice, they get presents on the 5th).
It's a shame that it is not a happy kids fest anymore, and police escort is needed.

He some more detailed reading about it with a good background on it:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinterklaas

Below 5 pics of how we celebrate it:
