The point just off dead center of the steel with an ever so slight belly to the cutting edge, for close in skinning and fillet work 2 3/4 to 3"blade length, 3/4 but no more than 1" wide, 1/16" thick stock but no more than 3/32" with a three finger handle?

A Fairbyrnesykes style would be a great design...

Just change ta wood scales. With a lil "downsizing".. It'd be a sweet lil thing...LOL

here is what i came up with, based on what you and Hushnel suggested:

6.5" OAL
2 3/4" cutting edge
1/16" thick carbon steel
3/4" at its widest point

OK.  This is a case of not where I was going, but better.  Good heads up to those interested in having a custom knife built.  Listen to the maker.  I like it better than what I was thinking.  Better user.  Better knife (for my app).  We're still working on it.  I'm going to try out the shape and give him feed back.  The end product is a ways away.

That looks like a great design Steve. As Tony was saying to finish the knife off with brass pins and no liners but instead of wood I think some green micarta would be great. I think forge look and convex for me and oh I will take one when they are ready.

I love the forge finish.  I think thinner is better in a necker (weight).  The handle shape is really sooo personal.  Input requested.  Good, bad, fire away.

I think you and Steve are on to something with this necker skinner knife. The handle shape looks great but I can't wait to see a prototype with a handle on it. The blade design would be a great multi use knife. If Steve can keep the price down these should sell like hot cakes. It would be easy to make a small leather pocket sheath to keep them in.

lets see how it comes out before anything is set in stone. i can already tell you guys that grinding 1/16" steel is no fun. i am about to do the HT on it, so everyone keep your fingers crossed that it doesnt warp too badly :D

Looks cool. I like the continuous curve spear point.  For me, personally, I'd probably like some sort of guard/choil since I don't like handle flare-outs (because they make side-holding difficult) and I like the "training-wheels" of a blade guard. Other than that, this knife looks like a great bushcraft necker or pocket fixed blade.

I agree that for a necker/small knife, a thin blade is preferred for shear cutting performance. I can't see myself using a 3" knife for anything "hard use," so even 1/8" is too thick. I think I'd be OK with 3/32", but 1/16" sounds good, too!  I have a 1/8" scandi necker that I find too thick. I also LOVE lightweight stuff, and dropping thickness drops a lot of weight of a blade, especially full, exposed tang knives.

Keep up the good work, I'd love to see this one with a handle! Good luck in HT!

Looks good, I've been using neckers for a long time now, I appreciate that you took my ideas into account. It's a good design, I like it.

By and far this is my favorite necker.

When I first saw the Nessmuk design the hump on the back spine near the point kind of turned me off but once I profiled a couple it became obvious that the design had a lot going for it. When you are working the point, say around a bone or fleshing out game that little extra bit on the blade really provides much better control and enough steel to increase the belly radius. It may not be what madmax is looking for athletically but the increased functionality makes it well worth it.

The second blade from the right is my next home made necker, I really want to try out the style, in one of your posted pictures above the way your choking up on the point is actually a common grip using a neck knife and this Nessmuk style may just be the ticket.

On the two knives I pictured above you'll also notice how the back of the handle drops, this provides leverage for pivoting the blade, since the handle is short, as well as the blade, control of a small knife can be an issue. When you are choking up on the point, the knife will pivot on the bird finger, the pointer and thumb holding the blade and the ring finger engaging the drop of the end of the handle to finesse the point and belly of the edge, if any of that makes any sense.

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming "o)

I'm way ahead of ya, I've got Elk, Bison and Hog for the soles. I crated up the Tippmann, though I think mocs need to be hand stitched. I wish I would have paid closer attention back when they were still hand making them at the Rendezvous.

They're pretty easy to do.  That's what I wore last year at Alafia.  Be nice to have a more sturdy design though.

Here's what the Big Red One sent me.  I likee.  I know he doesn't like working the thin stuff, but it's just what I wanted.  He threw in a buncha extra goodies, 'cause that's just the way he is.  The Schrade's gettin' some thin pants and will be a pocket carry this summer.  The scales are osage orange (HARD!) and cocobolo.  I've got an old Hibben's throwing knife that might get the cocobolo scales.  I like the shape of it.  The osage orange will eventually go on the necker when I'm done butchering it down. :)

I've got a great campfire story about a .410, a cow, and mushrooms in an osage orange orchard a long time ago....hey...it was the seventies maaaaaaan...
