A little reorganizing...
« on: May 29, 2012, 04:24:54 PM »
This isn't necessarily permanent. I have moved some of the categories around on our home page just to see how it affects our google ranking. If it has no effect after a little while I'll put everything back the way it was. All of our categories, boards and topics are still here, just scooted around a bit to put 'bushcraft" at the top of our index page.

Thanks for your patience during this little experiment. :)

You got me on the move. I was looking at something on the homepage and when I came back everything was scrambled. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.

Yeah, I think I'm going to just put it all back to normal. This is too crazy.

Ok, what I've done is to add a new "redirect" board at the top of the forums. Our index page as displayed on google's search results kept showing up with the "READ THIS FIRST" forum rules board. I didn't want our first impression to be a bunch of rules telling folks what they can't do, so I thought reorganizing the order of the categories would be better. Well, that was so bad I decided to change it out and just add a new "welcome" redirect board at the top.

I'm hoping that the next time google's spiders crawl us they will pick up the change and we will have a more welcoming face on the search results. :)

Clicking the board does nothing but redirect you to the index page. It's there purely for appearances.

Well we're at the top of page two now with this change, which is good    :D

But this still shows up at the end of the information on it.

"53 Redirects. No New Posts, ** READ THIS FIRST** Forum"

You could maybe just continue with the Intro part so google will pick up that part and leave off the rest.  Just something to sound inviting:

Just an example:

"Welcome to Blades and Bushcraft, the web's best place to discuss knives and the great outdoors!  Feel free to pull up a chair by the fire and share stories and information about trips and gear with other bushcraft enthusiast."

Something similar to that would be long enough to not include the next section would probably help a little.

If we can just make that first page baby!!!!

Thanks for the info. I'll make the change right now. :D

Funny that it says 53 redirects. They must have crawled us today...

Lol, yeah it will be tough to get to page one with just "bushcraft" as a search term. We will get there, but it will require considerably more content. But, we add more every day so it will eventually happen. I'm pretty sure for just starting up an essentially being a 4 month old forum we are doing spectacular in that regard, thanks to our members. :)

That's awesome.

The raking position can vary depending on whether you are logged into a google account, and what region you're in. Logged out, my computer shows us in 6th place, then logged in we are in 5th place. ;)

Personal Search History, if you don't have it turned off? Just guessing.....

I think it's like OP said, if you are logged into your google account it will report a higher ranking result. Still, it's pretty awesome!

It also makes a difference if you have your "history" with Google turned on, or not. If you've visited sites before, and they are in Google Browsing History, they pop right to the top. I could be wrong, though.....

Does the google "history" work while you are logged out? if so, I'd like to find out how to turn it off so I can see what a first-time searcher for "bushcraft forum" will see.

Google keeps a road map of everything you do!  If you're in your Account, you can go to Options or Preferences, or whatever it is, and turn off the history, suggested topics, etc.
Then, of course you would also have to clear the cookies on your PC.

Ok, found it. It wasn't turned on to begin with. But I did disable personalized search results as well.

Okay....quick test!

Google Searches:

"Bushcraft blades"  - B&B is AT THE NUMBER ONE SPOT!

"Bushcraft knives"   - B&B is nowhere to be found.

"knives bushcrafting" - again no B&B hits.

So maybe those other search parameters need to be added to the front of the  "keywords" list on the home page?

Also "Bushcraft sites" yields no results (on the first page) for B&B,
But "Bushcraft forums" shows us at #5 spot.

A tip I learned a few years back:

If you want a site to "float to the top", don't stay logged in while you're puttering on other stuff. Keep logging in, and logging out.  Well, not logging out really, but disconnect. You can still have the board "remember" you so you don't have to log in every time.

The theory is that popularity among search engines depends upon the number of 'thoughputs' a site gets. The more times it's visited, the higher it climbs on the ladder.
