Latest Build.... I LOVE Oregon Juniper!
« on: June 11, 2012, 09:43:38 PM »
Hey all!
Just wanted to share my latest build. Oregon Juniper for scales again, bone, brass, and Fatwood spacers, black/white liners, and Solingen Hunting 5" blade, with modified spine.
I think it turned out great, and I seem to be getting a bit faster even though I am still using mostly rasps and files for shaping. Although full (exposed) Tang knives are the real workhorses, I am really drawn to the Hidden Tang style. I know what I am building may not be a prybar, but I know they are plenty strong, but yet so ight and well balanced.. They just feel so good in the hand...
Thanks for looking, and hope you like it!

Very nice that is some purdy wood. What makes the end white?

It's a piece of Deer antler....

I have a lot more detailed pic's that would show that, but I don't think I can post the link to my blog on here, and it is a lot of work to post pictures to forums with this IPad, a LOT of work. So I go with minimal pictures...
I also forgot to mention that I used black leather for spacers between the fatwood and the antler end... Fills slightly uneven gaps better. Getting bone and wood together in curves that big isn't easy, thus the leather. Then harden it with superglue. Works great!
Thanks for the compliment!

That's just plain awesome!  That juniper looks really nice.  I have a piece of juniper from my buddy's yard.  I was contemplating using it for a knife, and you just confirmed that I should.  How did you finish the wood?
Is there such a thing as too many knives?

Awesome looking blade. I really like the book matched handle slabs and they polish up quite well.

How did you finish the wood?
Hand Rubbed Tung Oil finish (8 coats) 24hrs between coats, then 0000 Steel Wool, then 48hrs after last coat I hand buff, light Steel Wool buff, then high speed buff with Carnuba Wax.... Finish is hard as a rock... Satin finish just means skip the high-speed buffing...
Make sure to post yours when it's complete!

One of the reasons I love Juniper so much. Swirling grain, multi-color, but easily lined up lines/grain...
I've had some great Cocobolo too that had very defined lines between colors...
Thanks for the compliments guys!

Ooops, forgot my Blog... Real simple, and I can be slow to update, but I don't have many followers, and new to this blogging thing, so if I get some action on it, it will become more of a priority.
Also will be sure to link this site to it, a must do for me!

Sorry, not in my possession anymore.... I might have some other shots but will have to hunt them down..
Yes, the spacers show on the other side exactly as they do on top...  Thanks!
