I don't know if it's appropriate to start a thread here in Announcements, but if not then feel free to can this one.

Three weeks into the endeavor, and the Board is Booming! Congrats!

I was wondering if any thought had been given to creating separate forums for, let's say, "Wildlife" and/or "Plants"?  It might provide a section for people to upload their wildlife photos, or post information on wild edibles, plant ID, etc., without over taxing the General Discussion Forum.

Just a thought.

Ya I asked about a wild edibles section and was told they will add one along with more sections in time. They are waiting for more posts to add sections I think.

actually, we were waiting for there to be a need for it. being that we are so new, we didnt want to overwhelm new membership with a ginormous empty forum. ill talk to PW tonight and see if we can make that happen for you guys :D

We have had a few requests for expansion here and there. While we do want to keep things organized and categorized, we also don't want to spread the topics too thin at this early a stage in our growth. Each of our boards is still on the first page of threads so while are growing fast, we still have plenty of room.

What we can do for now, however, is keep track of requested sections here in this thread and if any one subject among them begins to see a surge in related post, we will add the relevant board.

So far, we have had requests for:

Plant and Tree identification and uses
Outdoor cooking
Wildlife photography

Any of our members can feel free to add to the list and we'll definitely consider all of them and if there is a need, implement them. But for now we are a long way from cluttering up the general, and bushcraft and skills boards.

Any of these topics would be perfectly acceptable to post in the bushcraft and skills section, or the general discussion forum.  If a member later wishes to have a thread they started moved to a more specific board once we create it, we'll be happy to move it on request. (Unless we get so many requests we have to hire elves to handle them all.) :D

Gotcha!
The only reason I even brought it up was because it's so early in the game.

Yeah, it would be disconcerting for new visitors to go to a bunch of empty Forums. But in my way of thinking, it's like a fish tank. The fish will take up whatever space you provide for them, large or small.  ;D

P.S. I was typing this when the "new post" thingy popped up, and I revised it. COOL feature!!!!!

If I may suggest - could you not merge Outdoor Cooking with Wild Edibles?

Outdoor Cooking and Wild Edibles - Campfire food, foraging, identification, and recipes.

Makes sense. I guess venison counts as a "wild edible", right?

That would be sensible. But then as OP mentioned, venison is a wild edible as well. Though perhaps not so closely related to plant and tree i.d. as to hunting.

All in good time, gentlemen! :D

How about a download section where the members can upload or download related topic material. I have the first season of Dave Canterbury magazine, Self Reliance Illustrated, that he gave out free over the Christmas week.  I have few other publications that are PDF files that the members would probably enjoy.

How about when the time is right a section dedicated to homesteading, farming, livestock, canning, spinning and the like?
Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? One should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, it is much safer to be feared than loved.

All great ideas. I say build it and they will come! I don't think you have to worry about empty spaces too long. It would be nice just to have it in a more detailed layout right away. This is coming from a guy with a messy desk and a touch of procrastination in me too.  ;D

This might be possible in the future, but for now we want to keep our storage size small so we don't get any extra charges from our hosting service. We disabled image attachments for this same reason.

However, we do have a button for inserting an FTP link so you can share files if you have a place to host them.

I think we'll probably add another section or two once the general discussion and bushcraft and skills sections grow beyond their first page of topics (should be soon, at the rate we are growing). ;)

I concur. It is so much easier to organize, than re-organize.

As to Wilderbeast's suggestion, I also concur. While the subjects are not specifically "bushcraft", a lot of folks seem involved in these activities. Things like gardening, and livestock raising would seem to be directly related to self-sufficiency.

After reading Woodswoman's thread, maybe a broad category could be:

"Country Living - a place to discuss homesteading, gardening, backyard cooking, livestock and other related interests."

Many of us will be starting our planting season soon, it would be nice to have a place to swap pictures and knowledge.

Ditto with chickens, livestock in general, building pole barns and such.

Canning, dehydrating, root cellars, cisterns, that kind of stuff.

My wife spins fiber from our goats and llama, it would be fun to share what she produces.

I would describe what I propose as "Basic Country Living Skills".

Not prepper mentality but just what some of us do "down on the farm".

Okay, question about the forums, subforums, whatever.....

It there an option you can toggle within the software to place a "Read new post", or "First Unread Message" near or on the tread header bar?
Right now there is "Reply...Notify(or unnotify)...Mark Unread...Send This Topic...Print". Is there provision for something like Goto First Unread?

There is an orange "new" button next to thread titles with new posts since your last visit that you can click, and it should take you to the last unread post.

Not sure if this is the correct place to ask or not, but, is there a limit of photos you can post per single post? I tried a new topic, that has 36 photos, and it just wouldn't do it. It says to try again, and contact the administrator if the problem persists. I tried a few times last night, and once today, all with the same result.
