I picked this up today at a garage sale for $7.00. I have no knowledge of Homestead brand at all. I have not googled yet either so I don't know if I got a deal or not.

It is about 28" long. I guess that is boy's axe range? The handle looks like it says "Genuine Collins Hickory".

Hey Buckskin...
That's a helluva find. Especially for 7 bucks! Those old 'Collins' Homestead axes are fine axes. It's even got the original handle. DON'T cut it off save it, clean it and the head up and you will have a very fine axe indeed.

On second thought... Why bother with the trouble? Just send it to me

It looks like a boys axe. What's the length?

I like the Collins Homestead axes. I know OPERATOR1975 did a post here on the history of Collins. I re-posted it here: http://woodtrekker.blogspot.com/2012/07/collins-co-manufacturing-guest-post-by.html It is well worth a look. You have a good axe there.

What a great find. The Collins Homestead line is highly regarded and that one is in good shape. You'll have a keeper once you get her all cleaned up.

Pre 1966. Those Collins handles are usually top notch. Nice find. Have a couple of those - they were once the working line of Collins - good dependable well made axes.

But yeah, 7 bucks for any axe older that say 15 years is a good deal in my opinion. I love garage sales!

Great find. I have a Collins Homestead hatchet that I picked up at a flea market for a song. The Homestead series have excellent profiles and really good steel. The nice thing is that there are still lots of them around, so prices are usually reasonable.

Ross, that's a real nice Homestead axe. When I get some time I want to find a larger Homestead axe like yours and restore it. I really like the Homestead hatchet I have. Holds an edge just like my Gransfors Wildlife hatchet.
