Spoon challenge
« on: February 28, 2012, 02:36:12 PM »
Had an idea the other day   was talking with Kep  by  email about it showed him the inspiration so I challenged him to a friendly spoon carving competition between him and I.  Here is  my take on the US GI spoon he did  same spoon  to :)

the inspiration for the  challenge

My version  finished  aside from oiling it up :)

That's sweet!  You did that with just the tools pictured?  I'll have to try my hand at making another spoon, it's been a few years and the last one I made I accidentally carved too far and put a hole in it!

Did you use green wood or dry?  What kind of wood?  And what oil do you finish it with?

Ah...a million questions here.

i accepted Easy Riders challenge and today carved my  representation of said spoon.

The spoon was carved from  Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) and took about 90 minutes to make,  from  selecting the log to the final finish. I have to say, i enjoyed carving  to a set design and really like the shape and style of the spoon, for  reference the spoon is 6 3/4" in length and the bowl is 1 3/4" at it's  widest point, the cut out in the handle measures 1/2"  wide and is 1"  long.

Yep just hand tools no power tools were allowed  for this. Mine is made from beech yep it is still very  green needs time to dry before I can oil it up and will be using mineral oil for  that. It is great fun  spoon  carving

look forward to seeing yours my first couple were so so but  the more you do the better you  get for sure
