Fixed a long standing problem on the forum
« on: December 14, 2012, 09:22:46 AM »
While poking around in the settings today, I discovered that our forum was configured to have browsers reload each page, even when you hit the "back" button. This creates two problems. One, it wastes bandwidth by reloading the page, and two, if you had typed up a long post and accidentally left the page, when you tried to hit the back button, everything you typed would be lost.

The new settings direct your browser to go back to the stored page instead of reloading a fresh one. This will allow us to recover all that typing instead of starting all over! :D

It's still a good idea to compose any long detailed posts in notepad and then paste to the forum just in case. But this will save a lot of frustration for those posts that are just long enough to be a pain to re-type.

Well,  Thank God I wasn't the problem you fixed.  I live here apparently.  :)

I've lost long posts. Thanks for the tweak!

One "new" thing I'm noticing is that when reading the 'new' posts by punching the little orange button and I return to the list of new posts, that new post that I just finished reading has not removed itself from the list.  I now have to refresh the page to remove it :pissed:

That's fantastic, PW! Thanks for catching that.
Too bad it wasn't "fixed" 24 hours ago. I've lost more than a few, but usually I just take it as a sign that I was supposed to keep my mouth shut. Hahaha.

Theres another problem that started with the Bean..     I cant click on PM's on the list and have them pop up anymore.    I have to scroll down and search for it.    It used to be I could click on the PM..and it shows the topic of PM is clickable..but nothing happens when I click on it, the PM doesnt come up.     Is there something I need to change in my settings or is this in your settings?   :)

Dunno whaere to post this, but speaking of forum technical issues: my Quick Reply box does not word wrap anymore.  I wonder if it is just my browser or something is odd?  It just keeps going in a single line like NotePad does if you do not enable word wrap.  When it posts it looks fine, but like now, I am typing way off the page to the right.  When I post, it will all wrap and look correct though.

That is strange. It might be a browser issue, or it might be a setting in your profile, but I am leaning towards browser.

Okay...weird!  If I type a string of letters with no spaces, it won't word wrap when I come to the edge of the text window. But if I'm typing normally, with spaces and words, it wraps just fine. I never noticed that before.

There is a setting that can break up words longer than x number of characters. It is set to 80 I believe. Perhaps reducing the max word length would help text wrap better.

Perhaps. I haven't seen anybody use antidisestablishmen tarianism, or floccinaucinihilipi lification recently, so 80 letters might be over-kill.
