Wooden Case and Howling Dingo logo firesteel
« on: August 07, 2013, 02:47:48 AM »
Okay Guys...This one is made from maple burr wood with matching casing which slips onto the rod to protect it during travel thru the bush.On the end of the lanyard is a kangaroo bone toggle and steel striker. My logo/makers mark is burned on ...

That is a pretty handy, and nice way to carry a ferro rod.  I like it a lot.
Thanks for posting up some photos of it

That is sweet looking HD. You did a great job on the firesteel case.

Thanks for sharing that!
I really enjoy seeing custom ferro rods, especially ones like this with an actually case as part of the design. The antler handle ones I find around here are getting pretty boring.

  HowlingDingo,
I am curious to know how the part of the case/cover that covers the striking part of the rod stays in place, when the rod is not in use? Or, in other words, as you are traveling thru the bush, what would keep the cover from falling off?. Is there something inside it to prevent possible loss, or is this just to protect the rod if it was in a pocket?
I love being out in the woods!   I like this quote from Mors Kochanski - "The more you know, the less you carry". I believe in the same creed, & think  "Knowledge & honed skills" are the best things to carry with ya when you're out in the wilds. They're the ultimate "ultralight" gear! ;)

Nicely done! I bet you could get a pair of tiny magnets and embed one in the sleeve and one in the handle to keep it together.

I've made hard wooden knife sheaths. I'm going to guess friction is all that's needed to keep it together.

Thanks for the feedback chaps....The wooden case is held in by friction you have to pull to get it off.You can spin the firesteel round on the lanyard and it will stay on.

Very cool fire steel HD!   ;)

I'm really impressed with your logo, looks very intricate did you use a stencil or did you burn it in free hand?
