Timed out...grrr....
« on: September 12, 2013, 02:43:21 PM »
Don't know where else to put this.
I am experiencing chronic "Connection has timed out - the server at Blade & Bushcraft is taking too long to respond" messages!
I just lost a 3 paragraph post to this wonderful event.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
I have a 11 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload connection. Every other site is speed-of-light when pinging, or downloading a page.
This is getting frustrating. It's only become chronic over the past 2-3 days.
Don't bother walking a mile in my shoes. That would be boring. Try spending 30 seconds in my head. That will freak you right out!!

I've had that same thing in the past week, several times.  I thought it was my ISP or something.

Of course, I wasn't doing anything productive like posting......just browsing.

I haven't had the problem guys, but when I build long posts I usually create it in word first then copy and past it to the board.

I just figured it was our crappy ISP >:(.   I think it is, mostly, because people all over town are having the same problems.  The service dude was here yesterday and told me they're having a heckuva problem tracking it down.....figgers :P

I was having problems with it months ago.  I thought it was problems with my browser (Firefox) and tried using Chrome and IE...all were having the same problems.  I talked to a service tech one day and was told they were adding another switch to handle the traffic flow.  Eventually it stopped and has been fine since.

Good luck out there you guys.

I have not experienced a time-out either.  Most of my posts are short so that might be why.  My internet speed is well under OP's.

With other forum software, I had this happen when 1, 2 or more people were all trying to post to the same thread at the same time. But this time around here, that's not the case.
The post I thought I lost that prompted this thread was actually made. WTH?  I hit "Post" and it sat there, and sat there, and finally I got the "Timed Out" error popup. After a few minutes, I went back to that thread, and there was my post. The forum processed my posting, but the redirect got lost somewhere on its way back to me, so I got the Timed Out thing.

You guys might not have noticed, but I added a page creation timer at the very bottom of every page. It tells you how long the forum takes to generate a page. It has been pretty consistently fast. Any load delays are likely some kind of bottleneck somewhere between here and your computer. Tell your congressmen all the spying is slowing down your favorite website.

Probably a lot of truth to that!  I timed one "lag", and it was 18 seconds. When the page came up, you meter said it only took .017 sec to create the page. It's not the forum software. Is the host server taking on too many clients?

I don't think so. If it was our host,  everyone would experience lag at the same time.

It would be interesting to see the route on the web, here to there. It's fine now, but my worst experience was at 2:28 pm (MDT) yesterday. Timed out 5 times in a row.

I've had the occasional time out as well. It's just one of those things that happens sometimes. I used to freak out and worry that the site was down, but it turns out the site is usually fine and it's something closer to my end, as confirmed by a phone call to someone in a different area who can use the site just fine.
