I noticed you can't access the smileys when you're modifying a post, bummer. So I thought this thread could be a cut and paste reference as a band-aid for that issue...

in the "Attachments and other options " menu at the bottom of the post creation screen, there's an option "Don't use smileys." Check the box.
I don't know why I couldn't figure out how to post the [more] menu before. stupid logic leaps....

Its gonna have to be 2 posts because I don't think you can have the smileys on and off in the same post, least not without knowing more HTML than my none.
I'll try to remember to come back and edit the original post here when more get added.

the actual smiley set came in a whole spectrum of colors but we chose white because it was the only ones we could agree on. :d I did like the green ones and the purple ones.

But now after adding all these custom smileys to the white set it would be a PITA to switch to another set and have to re-upload all the custom ones to the new location. Maybe I could figure out how to move them en masse using the FTP client.

I recently realized that I'm an idiot. Also you you can click the modify icon on top instead of regular ol edit below and obviate this thread entirely.

The additional smileys are not even showing up in the popup window for me now. I have all the switches turned on to show/use smileys, but all I get is a block of text in that window with the names. Not even links to them.

LOL for some reason those "basic" smileys seem to be working for me, or at least I can see them, instead of some little window looking thingees.

Yeah, those "basic" ones are what I would call "hard coded" into the software. The others live outside the program and are linked to the editor. That be broke.

Ok, it looks like our emoticon directory has somehow changed in the process of fixing the tapatalk problem. I am running another FTP backup since we now have tapatalk working (and we are now upgraded to SMF 2.0.7 from 2.0.5). Once the backup is complete, I can take a look and see what happened to the file. It is possibly still there and I just need to tell the software where to look again.

Alright. Bad news folks. The smileys we all know and love are gone.

If you guys can find the ones you liked to use elsewhere online and post them here, I can upload them again. Meanwhile, I will look on my computer and see if I still have the smiley file where they were stored. It has been a couple of years, and I have re-installed my OS a few times since so I might no longer have the file.

They all exist out there in the world somewhere, it's just a matter of finding them and getting them back together in one place.

When we started out, you were taking requests for smileys. There is a thread somewhere here (archived?) that had them all. Maybe the code/links for them are still intact?

Smileys typically don't play nice with tapatalk. They never have.

It often recognizes the first few characters of one of our custom smileys as something in it's standard list and displays it as such, along with the remaining characters.

for example, the "shrug" smiley I posted above, looks very different on tapatalk. It recognizes the first two characters, a colon and the letter "S" as a different smiley from the app's own list, and displays it, along with "hrug:".
