Airgun
« on: February 08, 2012, 08:35:03 PM »
I want to get a airgun something for SHTF to use for hunting and stealth defense not to draw attention.  Any recommendations?  ;)

I have a Diana RWS .177 Air Rifle I received in trade years ago. This thing packs a decent wollop for an air rifle. It's muzzle velocity is somewhere around 1200 + FPS; not bad for a pellet gun, and it's accurate as hell.

It might even outdo a .22 Caliber Rifle for a TEOTWAWKI situation in terms of long term usefulness. I can carry more rounds, and don't need to rely on gun powder or need to be concerned about getting rounds wet. The .177 pellets would be easier to make if I needed to make my own at some point.

It is an interesting concept for a survival rifle. I wan't to buy a .177 pellet mold so I'm set if the worst comes to pass. However, I'm currently on the hunt for a recurve bow an even better option I think. Easy to mend, make arrows etc.

A truly powerful air rifle might be viable for small game procurement. I'd be interested to see where you can find a .177 pellet mold however.

I think if I was going to choose an airgun for hunting, I'd pick a .22. It's easy to get caught up in the velocity game, and choose .177 because it's a faster caliber than .22 when fired from the same airgun. But, the really fast .177 pellets can go supersonic. If the target is far enough from the muzzle that the pellet drops down below the speed of sound, there is a lot of turbulence in that transition that can adversely effect accuracy.

You're better off with a heavier, slower .22 pellet that never goes supersonic. The potential for accuracy is better, and the heavier pellet can impart more energy to the target.

(This is all just my opinion, of course.)

As for the seriousness of this topic, well...

We'll play along. I like air rifles so no biggie.

What's stealth defense?  My 870 and 454 Casul probably don't count?   :)

I got an air rifle for Christmas, it's just a Remington Airmaster 77, but it will do the job on squirrels and rabbits.

I have not seen a pellet mold, but I've heard myths and rumors about the mold called the McGuire from England. Not sure if it's still made, though.

i shoot air weapons all the time, rifles and pistols, all of them are in .22 as it has stopping power, a good comparison i was once told is

.177 is like a surgeons scalpel, whereas .22 is like a cavemans club.

I will be right back with a link or pic but people really do use airguns for large game, deer, bear, cape buffalo, lion, etc.

One's saintnick001's hatband.  The other is on one of mine plus part of a sheath and small pouch.  They didn't go to waste.

Surely, you jest?

I don't think he is jesting, and please don't call him Shirley.

I like the idea of stealth defense.  That must be when you have so successfully defended yourself that the attacker doesn't even notice.
Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? One should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, it is much safer to be feared than loved.

I always thought the best defense was a terrible, shockingly loud sound.

I typically use beans to get the desired effect, but a shotgun would likely do the trick as well.
