Canoe race
« on: August 09, 2014, 03:28:38 PM »
I guess it's been 35 years or so since I was in a canoe race. As part of a local celebration called the Smith River Fest, I took part in one today. The weather was gloomy with lots of showers but there were about 50 boats that actually took part in the event. A darn good turn out I thought. Here are a few pics.

Part of the gang waiting for the "safety meeting"

Some trying to stay dry

One heat at the starting line

A few pics of the crowd and boats at the finish

All finds of stuff to do. I didn't take many more pics for fear of getting my camera wet.

The intrepid little Mohawk that I rode.

A real fun event. Feel for the folks at the festival. Hadn't rained in 3 weeks. Today it did..and did..and did.

Good times! Gotta love a canoe... man, it's been too long. I've been out only once so far this year, and that in waves that we're breaking over the side. Time for a nice paddle...

Racy pictures, Creek. Thanks for sharing.

I'm sorry to say I think I came in third. (official results haven't been posted). However, there were 17 in our heat so..not too bad. I reckon. Was fun and I was happy to see so many folks come out.

Well, heck...I'd say that was a very commendable performance, in light of your age and all. 8)    Probably a passel of young bucks in there nippin' at your heels all the way down the river, too.   Swingin' those axes all the time must keep your arms in shape! :chopwood:  :canoe:

Heck no! Those boys took off like their canoes were on fire. Both were paddling old town 11's. As we talked later, they are training for a 100 mile run on the James river. I knew I was at least 3rd in the first 10 minutes :) There is a pic of their finish and the were side by side. I'll see if I can post it. Those boys were stroking! I'm sore today ..lol. Tons of fun and that's the point.
