Hot dirty work but love the harvest dinners.

While I've had many a Fall dinners with fall harvest produce, I've never had a harvest dinner on a Farm, I think that would be cool to have the real deal one day... 8)

Its a tradition in our family, lots of neighbors, lots of good food, and lots of fun. Farmers earn their fun, its a thankless job, imo
Nice matters

I wouldn't exactly call it "thankless"......though, it may seem that way at times. :'(   I just retired from being an 'active' farmer this last crop year, but I still have my hand in it....and probably will for the rest of my life!  It just becomes a part of you after a while, especially if you are a part of a longtime, small family-farm operation......it's kind of like genital herpes, once it's in your blood, you never truly get rid of it!

When I let it slip, earlier in this thread, that I was retiring after this year's harvest, MANY of my cyber-friends here at B&B jumped in and, not only wished me well, but expressed their appreciation for the farmers and all they do to feed the world.   It meant a lot to me then....and it still does!

I'll never argue that.... so a big thank-you to all the farmers out there...

Fink, I live in Lincoln. I think you might have trouble finding much affordable between here and Omaha. Not that I have looked. I would suggest Ashland or maybe Memphis. Nice little lake at Memphis.
good luck.

Not sure if its been mentioned.....but, the best late night talkshow host was from Nebraska I do believe..

Also, I believe that the great state of Nebraska should in fact have its State added to our forums and I hereby nominate it to be so, do I have anyone to second this?  8)

Thanks lgm, that's quite a responsibility, but I think I have the cajones for the job.  8)     I even have a framed parchment document in my office, bestowed on me and signed by the governor of the State of Nebraska, that proclaims me to be an official Admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska.....NO KIDDING!

I thought some of you might be interested in Nebraska's unique, one-house, non-partisan form of government.  It's the only Unicameral form of government in the nation.  This is a blessing or a curse, depending on which side of the fence you happen to be on, but it is undeniably interesting.  This article from today's newspaper explains, in a few short paragraphs, how it functions......

I knew that Nebraska was a single body but never paid a lot of attention to it.  It seems to lack a checks and balances ability at first glance but if it works, the it works.

It sure as heck cannot be any worse than the mess we have in Washington.

Good list Wolfy.

I remember Starkweather's killing spree.  When they were looking for him the authorities didn't know where he was for a time and the people in Denver were worried a bit.  I was 13 at the time.

Unicamerals? Is that a cross between a unicorn and a camel, cause then Nebraska goes from not to bad to totally awesome.
Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? One should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, it is much safer to be feared than loved.

I am constantly in search of information on the early settlers in NEBRASKA, especially in my section of the state.  The following article revealed a lot of information on an area that I am very familiar with, about 60 miles up the Missouri River from me.  The names of the people involved in the story live on in names of recreation areas, campgrounds, commercial concerns, etc.  Now, I have more specific information available to me to search out specific areas where these folks actually settled and built their homes and farms.

Anyway, it's a well-researched article that I found very interesting and, by chance, some of you guys may, also.....

Frank Richtig was, without a doubt, NEBRASKA'S most famous knife maker.   Mr. Richtig was the only knife maker to ever be featured in Ripley's Believe It Or Not newspaper articles.  Believe it!

His knives turn up on eBay occasionally with astronomical price tags!

Now that was an interesting read. To be honest I scanned quickly until I got to the part about austempering and analysis of his blades. I liked reading "no carnival trick" and " the real deal"
Something to think about if I was a knife maker or maybe not
...don't go thinking you know me.

I have seen many Richtig knives.I know a collector I have never owned one but keep looking.
Seams some bladesmiths are still trying to figure out how he did it.
At one time I was going to try and own a blade from every Nebraska maker. I have knives from two and my eye on s third.
What a great day to be outside.
