How to tell a morel??
« on: September 03, 2014, 10:28:15 AM »
Hi, we moved and we had these round mushroom things in our yard and we let one sit to see what will happen and a few days later poof, a morel looking mushroom appears. However the top isnt closed, i washed it off and its white with a yellow stem, its hollow and pitted. after i cut it open before it was cut,
The bottom of the cap is not attached from what we can see. From what i understand it has characteristics of both

Excellent follow-up post!     I was hoping you'd show the 'sectioned' false morel.  Some of them are so close in appearance that a longitudinal slice through the middle is the only way to identify them positively.

Most likely......if the cap is not hooked directly to the stem at its base, it for sure is.   One thing for certain, it ain't a true morel!

Not sure what you have there. Doesn't look honeycombed enough to be a true morel. What time of the year did you pick it?
