We left San Antonio this morning when temps were in the mid-20s, but had to quit just north of Ft. Worth in Denton.  The ice started forming on the roads around 3:00 and it was becoming treacherous to be on the road at all.  We got a motel and snagged an Uber-delivery of Colonel Sanders best for supper.  We probably won't be any traveling tomorrow, either....they're saying there will be .50'' of ICE by tomorrow morning.  That won't melt before Saturday, but I think we were lucky to get a room.....motels are turning on their NO VACANCY signs.  I just hope the power grid continues to function!

The National Weather service added a new type of public notification to their tool box last November.
Called the "Snow Squall warning" it brings attention to a short lived but intense period of snowfall and high winds resulting in a reduction or loss of visibility. It is often followed by a quick icing of roadways and a possible dangerous drop in temperature. Usually the duration of a "Snow Squall" is 30 to 60 minutes. Similar to a thunderstorm or tornado warning. These unexpected squalls are often responsible for multi car pileups as motorists get caught by a sudden loss of visibility and roadway icing. 

We had our first one this afternoon. An intense little snow storm and then it was over.
Lows around -10^oF tonight warm up to 0 tomorrow and then another -10 night. That should be the last cold blast for the season, Warmer temps are on the way next week. Highs in the 30's and we get to watch the snow melt and start splashing around in the mud for a month or so.

We've been in the 80's and close to 90 for about a week.  This storm front that has been (and is still) moving through is bringing some much welcomed rain.

Sunday morning we have a freeze warning.

Guess I'll have to cover my tomatoes and peppers.

We have been in a cold spell with single digits at night and high twenties in the daytime.  Windy to an extreme.  Gusty too.  Next week there are some days we are supposed to get into the 60's so I started the bike up and checked the tire pressure.  If a day of riding can be had so much the better.

Today it got up to 36 with clear skies, melted off a lot of snow.  It's supposed to maybe hit the high 40s this weekend if we get lucky.

May 19 2022. 3:00AM local time and the snow is coming down hard enough to obscure my view of the driveway.
It's been an unseasonably long cold wet spring. Local flooding, roads washing out. Farmers have not turned a wheel in the fields yet. The way Crop insurance works for corn, at least up here is, If the crop is not planted by the 25th of May, corn crop insurance will not be available. It's sure not looking good for the corn farmers this year. Without crop insurance to cover losses from wind, hail, or an early frost the gamble is just to high for most.
Fertilizer costs are almost double what they were last year. Diesel fuel costs are $5.47 at the pump. A little cheaper for tractor use as there is no road tax on that, but it's still about double what it was last year.
News programs said it was a hundred plus in the Southwest this morning, and we're getting snow tonight. We haven't broke 70F yet this year. I suppose when we do get the warm weather it'll roll in with triple digits and we'll be crowded around the air conditioning vents.

We may be a little on the Brrrr side of things, but I don't envy you guys in AZ or TX with them 105 and up temps. That's way into the danger zone for us Northern folk.

Doesn't sound like fun. If you get too cold the Southern Rockies are on fire and it's 90F Just don't breathe the air.
