I love those spiders. My wife took this with a cell phone but it got a lot of feedback on FB. He was just excited to be out of the pasture. This is how he usually starts to canter.

A couple weeks ago the neighbor got an 8pt buck from our woods with a bow. Yesterday we had another one in the front yard mid afternoon. This morning the buck from yesterday came back through following a doe. He was mostly unconcerned when I went out on the deck with my camera.

Nice deer photos Apercula.  I played with one tonight for 40 minutes and could not get him to come into the open.  He is a 5x5 and has good mass.

Crash that is a terrific photo of those jets.  Wow factor there.

Nice shots, fellas!
I set my game cam up a couple nights ago to see if I could catch the 5x5 and 4x4 that have been cleaning up our apple drops.
Next morning I found 110 10-sec vids on the camera.   I cut out a couple of blanks and ended up with a 17 minute movie of fat does.

Had another 8pt come through this afternoon. Not the same one as this morning, he had a different shaped rack. A couple years ago we had a young buck bachelor herd come through with 7-8 fork horn to 6pt boys. It appears a few of them have made it to maturity.

Eastern count vs. Western count always throws me. The deer in those pix is a  3x4 out here. Brow tines don't count.

Actually they do count.  Look at a Boone and Crockett score sheet.

Of course they count when adding up inches. Same with Pope & Young. I'm talking about regional conventions, and how Joe Hunter counts "points".
When I first moved to New Hampshire from WA State, my friend called me all excited to come look at his neighbor's 8-point buck. I rushed over to view this monster.  In the pickup bed, what I found was a little 3-point ("western count"). They explained to me that a point was counted "if you can hang a finger ring on it".
That season I took my first-ever Whitetail. What I bagged, in my frame of reference, was a "fork-horn" buck, but I was more than happy to brag about my "6-point" trophy.   8)

That is interesting that where you are, one state from me, you don't count brow tines but here they do.  My neighbor shot a 7x7 whitetail last year and it was a 6x6 with 6 inch brow tines.  He, and everybody else around here, counts them all.

When I first started hunting deer as a kid, the method still in use by Ol' P was always the popular way of describing antler size here in my part of Nebraska, but it has evolved into the method described by Stan.  I began noticing the changeover when archery became more popular as a hunting method.  I find myself using both methods......depend ing on whether they are older hunters that are around my age or of the younger set who are mostly bow hunters.

That is interesting. At least here in NW Montana, only tines on the main beam are counted. Also, we get a lot of asymmetrical racks, so it's common to talk about a 2 x 3, 4 x 5, etc.  Eastern Count, the 4x5 would be an 11 point, including the brow tines.

Never noticed a distinction between bow and gun hunters. But you are right about things changing. Back when I was living in Union, Nebraska in the early '70s, everyone was using Western Count.  But I mainly hunted with fellow service members from all over the country, so it really got confusing.

All that REALLY matters in Nebraska is that a legal deer has to have one antler of 6" or longer in length........not too bad. :coffee:

In Montana, an "antlered buck" has a minimum 4" spike.  If it's less than that, e.g., barely visible through the hair, it's technically "antlerless" and can be harvested as such.  We don't have "doe season" or "doe tags", we have "antlerless deer" seasons.

(Boy...we sure derailed this photo thread!)
