The Ram Rod is about to be on its way to California so time for another project.

This one is Walnut.

The goal here is to make something like this:

http://www.basspro.com/Light-My-Fire-FireSteel-Scout-Fire-Starter/product/97534/

It will not look exactly like that, but I am using it as something of a way point like you would in navigation.

Those of you that subscribe to a certain magazine will know right away that this is not an original idea, but it is one I had to try.

This is a Moravian Star in 1" x 1" poplar.

Lee Valley has them on sale for about $130 I think.  Amazon may still have a better deal though.  They are handy and I am really liking mine.

I sometimes think I need to have my head examined....

The one in back is the 1" x 1" one as above.  The one in front is 3/8" x 3/8".

Holy Smokes , Buckskin, I"m impressed!!!  :)

I've been carving today too.. trying to get some hanging santa's done.   Did three sock monkeys yesterday. ( ornies)

Are you going to paint these stars or leave them natural?

The bigger star I left natural and it is now living at my sister-in-laws house.

I did another little one today.  I am going to dunk them in red food coloring and make a set of earrings out of them.

I would like to see your sock monkeys~~~!!!

WORMS

Yeah, I had a few maple bow staves that looked like that after I had cured them out. Worms or other boring bugs were deep in the wood and didn't even know they were there. Ruined those bow staves. So they became firebow sets instead. :P

Buckskin what's the deal with that little strop? Also, is that thing you have screwed into the heads you handle or do you use that to mount it to the bench?
Take it easy,

WT the little strop is a thumb guard and the other is a handle I use to help keep my fingers away a little more.  It is kind of like a carvers screw.  Its just a piece of dowel with a cabinet screw stuck in the end of it.
