New Spoon (finally)
« on: February 27, 2016, 03:50:58 PM »
Hey all, it's been a while since I've carved, but I had a little time this afternoon.

I started this like, a year ago at Buck Lake with the guys, when I was given this Birch blank from Pinewood Forge (sorry I can't remember the handle of the guy who gave it to me). I promised him I'd finish it, and somewhat true to style.

I still want to tweak the sharpness of the edges, but I'm pretty happy with the overall shape and feel.

I will say I'm not a fan of sawcut blanks  and prefer riven (split).

Thanks for looking.

Classy. Nice work.

What didn't you like about the sawn blank?

I love being out in the woods!   I like this quote from Mors Kochanski - "The more you know, the less you carry". I believe in the same creed, & think  "Knowledge & honed skills" are the best things to carry with ya when you're out in the wilds. They're the ultimate "ultralight" gear! ;)

I like the profile shot of that one.  Well done.

I didn't like the sawn blank because the grain behaves differently across center, since not all the grain is down the spoon. It was fine, but made it more difficult to not tear out.

Thanks for all the compliments. Eventually I'll carve up the top

I went back looking, it was SamD who gave me the blanks. I'll carve up the second one when I get some more time.

Thanks guys!

Welcome to the real world.  That can happen in any piece of wood you work on.  The solution is to turn it around and carve in the other direction.  Gently.
