Stump Removal
« on: February 12, 2019, 09:48:59 PM »
I just watched a couple YT videos on "easy stump removal".  Both of these fellows were advocating drilling holes in the stump, and either burning it out, or letting it rot.  The burning method took a month, and the rotting method is still a "work in progress" over the past three years. Hahaha

So I felt compelled to offer my method.  It only took a day, and cost me about $20 (for 'supplies').

Equipment needed:
1. 2 shovels
2. Axe you will never need for wood chopping, or don't mind sharpening a few times
3. 3x10 foot poles to make an "A" frame over the stump
4. 2 teenage boys with unlimited strength and enthusiasm
5. 2-5 ton "comealong" hand winch
6. Small 4x4 jeep-type vehicle, or ATV.

Procedure:
Step 1: Have teenagers dig around the stump to expose roots. Chop roots as they come to them. Remove roots. Keep digging and chopping. A 3-4 foot radius hole around the stump about 3 feet deep should give access to the tap root. Chop through tap root.
Step 2: Assemble "A" frame by lashing poles together. Attach "comealong" to A frame. Run about a 15 foot chain under the stump and attach to comealong.
Step 3: Lever the winch while teenagers continue to dig and chop roots they missed previously.
Step 4: Continue to apply pressure with winch until A frame collapses under the strain.
Step 5: Disconnect chain from comealong and attach to frame of jeep/ATV. Engage 4 wheel drive.
Step 6: Increase RPMs of vehicle to about 3,000 RPMs...pop the clutch.
Step 7: Re-attach the chain to the stump.
Step 8: Pull slower this time.
Step 9: Drag the stump across the yard and revel in the cheering crowd which has now gathered.

Benefits of this method of stump removal:

General camaraderie of work crew
Further enrich the vocabulary of young helpers listening to you cuss
Necessity of consuming at least a half case of beer (for supervisor)
BBQ dinner and sodas for helpers
No stump, and a 4 foot wide, 3 foot deep crater that may be repurposed into a water feature for the yard.

And where, dear sir, do you find young men who are willing to put down their phones and get dirty?  We're not Montana here in Mickey Mouse land.  LOL.

I take the easy way out.  I just call my stump grinder guy.  Lots easier on me and I can still enjoy a nice BBQ dinner and adult libations afterwards.

Just  curious.... After watching those videos, I've heard everything from $2 per centimeter of stump height, to $100 flat rate.  What does your guy charge?

The guys around here charge by stump diameter.  The first time I used the guy I use, I had 18 stumps ground.  Some of these were absolutely huge----18-24 inches in diameter, and some smaller, but none less than about 12 inches.  He charged me $600.  Used him again last year for about the same number of stumps and several them very large and he charged $650.

My son down in Charleston, SC has an absolutely massive live oak stump in his backyard - easily 36" in diameter (probably larger) with several large above ground roots radiating off that will need to be ground, also.  He was quoted $800.

I ought to send you the link to the 1st guy I watched. Took him 7 weeks (6 of those weeks were for the "accelerant" to soak into the stump), a gallon of vegetable oil, and about a 1/4 cord of firewood.  I'm sure it cost him less than $800 (or $600, for that matter).

Pretty sure I've seen that vid, OP.  We did something similar when I was a kid except we'd put a 55 gallon drum with both ends cut out over the stump and burn in the barrel.  Takes too damned long and wastes a lot of good firewood.

I agree OP, here in florida sandy soil, I cut the roots near the surface, dig just enough to get the chain around and floor it. has worked everytime. I figure a little over a hour and  tools I have. Almost no cost but a little sweat.

"Too much like work" for a lot of folks. We lucked out with our property here. We are apparently on an entisol bench in an old creek bed. I don't think I could fill a wheelbarrow with the number of rocks bigger than a fist we've dug up in 20 years of gardening and construction.  I grew up in an area you could call a 'rock farm', or gravel bar. I hates rocks to pieces when I have to dig through them to even plant a shrub.

We had this big 'ssed silver maple tree in our front yard just off the street that forked out into two huge branches, the tree was about sixty or so years old and about 60 ft. tall,  one morning about five am my son was at the door to tell me that the tree had split in the previous night wind storm.
Looking out the front window I saw one hell of a mess, one of the huge branches had indeed split off, it missed my wife's car by a couple of feet, and in doing so snapped a pole taking out all the electric and phone lines on the street, it also took out about 30" my neighbors new PVC fence and totaled their new Dodge SUV and seriously messed up the hood and front fenders of his six month old Dodge Ram 4x4.
They were really good about it but sometimes still give me funny looks, anyhow, I had a tree co come and cut down the rest of the tree, the town got the street clean up, and the power company set a new pole and repaired the wires, the tree company left me the stump which they trimmed off to a height of about a foot above ground, the stump is about 42" in dia.,  this all happened about four years ago and the stump is about all rotted and ready to cut out with minimal work, so yes, letting nature take it course takes time, but it's a lot less expensive than a grinding service and a lot less hazardous than digging and pulling it out with your friends and their pick up truck.

Up here, a little shovel work and some chainsaw artist would turn that into a backyard octopus.  Matter of fact that's what most people around here do with ugly stumps; grab a chainsaw and turn it into a lawn ornament.

When I first started a commercial landscape business I balked at the price of removing a stump so we could install the landscaping.  So we dug it up.  I have never ever dug another stump up again.  and won't ever.

Can't say as I blame ya, Tony.  This one's 6 feet in diameter at its widest.

Coming off of living in pre 1840 for 10 days I thought about all the little farms in the east that people had to dig out and pull stumps like that all over.  I've heard a squirrel could travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi without touching the ground way back then.  It boggles my mind how those settlers carved out farms.  I have no experience with oxen.  But I imagine they were a precious part of the family.

In 1817 a team of 6 men and 4 oxen could pull forty stumps a day. No matter the size. A half scale replica is demonstrated on you tube. The original had a wheel diameter of 16 feet.

As neat as that thing is I don't think it would be pulling that stump Nuke posted out very quickly.   :-\

Six men, practiced and experienced in cutting and digging roots, a Puller twice the size of the scale model demonstrated and 4 oxen is a lot of power. Hard to say where the weak link would be in 1817, but a stump the size of the one Nuke posted would probably slow them down to a 35 stump day. What do you think?

Today there would be three guys cutting in shifts, two handling the oxen and one supervising with a clip board. Might take a little longer. :D

A record I just looked up.  And remember THIS is only TWO oxen yoked together, not four.

Quote
There is a story about a contest in Canada for the strongest ox. The  winning ox could pull 8,000 pounds  and the runner-up pulled just a little less than that. The owners of the oxen wanted to know how much the two oxen could pull together. Most observers placed a bet around 16,000 pounds. Some bet a little more, some a little less. When they actually put the two oxen in front of the weights, they pulled over 26,000  pounds! That is true synergy: the sum is more than the components together. That is why team playing is so much more effective.
