Reliable Information for Homesteading Skills
« on: June 01, 2012, 08:41:21 PM »
I rely on information from the University of Nebraska Extension Service in our farming operation all of the time because it's tested and provided as a free service that I can trust.  This is a treasure-trove of great downloadable reliable educational publications and information that has been tested at taxpayer expense.  It's FREEEEE folks, so take advantage of it.  Here ya' go.........

Thanks.....I was beginning to wonder if anyone else thought it was   I know that I've gleaned a bunch of good solid information from these types of sites.   I hope others add to this list with similar reliable information that is available to them.  It makes for a good reference 'library' for all of the forum members to draw from.

Greyhound352 posted this elsewhere today, but I've been going through it and there's a bunch of good stuff in here that needs a place for country people to access easily.  It won't get lost or buried so easily here as it will in the General Discussion section.    Thanks greyhound

Years ago I bought a triplex dirt cheap mainly because it had one of the worse cockroach infestations I'D ever seen . Google cockroach and up popped U. of Nebraska  page . Followed reccomendations and about $100 and a month later all were gone . Triplex recently appraised for about fout times what I paid for it .

RoadLessTraveled brought this site to our attention in his thread on suitable plants for spindles, fire boards, etc.    It covers the whole country and is an excellent place to find out if a particular plant grows in your area and there are excellent photos to identify them.  I moved it here so it doesn't get lost and for reference.....

I found this site tonite as I was trying to help WoodsWoman with an answer on how we freeze our sweet corn on the ear for best results.  As I was poking around on it, I found LOTS of good stuff for preserving garden produce, making jams & jellies, etc.

Just scroll down this LONG list for the possibilities.....

That's another good online source!  :)

I was a loyal subscriber to TMEN up until issue #100, when I quit subscribing in the dark days of the pre-internet.    At that point, I felt it was becoming too 'yuppified' for this crusty old coot. >:(.   I was a BIG fan of Stewert Brand's Whole Earth Catalogs too, which BTW, it has been revealed, was one of the driving forces that spawned the concept & idea of the Internet in the first place........much to Al Gore's chagrin, I might add. I don't normally add commercial sources for gear to the forum, but the equipment that this acclaimed NEBRASKA-based business carries is definitely the cream o' the crop when it comes to QUALITY, LONG LASTING, top of the line equipment & FAMILY FOOD PAKS for if or when the SHTF :-\.   They stand behind their products and you talk to REAL people if a problem comes up or you need repairs.

FROM DOUBLE OTT

I posted this in the Axes, Saws and Tomahawks forum and Wolfy thought it would  be a nice sticky here.

Crosscut Saw Information that all owners and admires can use.

I was recently sharing some information with another crosscut saw owner about crosscut saws and I sent him some information that is available from The USDA Forest Service about crosscut saws. While you can request these from the Forest Service, they are now available online for you to read and review.

I thought that I would share them with all that maybe interested.

An excellent book is "Saws That Sing A Guide to Using Crosscut Saws. (illust. 62 pages)
    LINK:
    http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/recreational_trails/publications/fs_publications/04232822/lc04232822.cfm

Next is another good book from the Forest Service. Crosscut Saw Manual (illust. 30 pages)
    LINK:
   http://www.fs.fed.us/t-d/pubs/pdfpubs/pdf77712508/pdf77712508dpi72.pdf

An excellent DVD by Warren Miller (an expert saw filer) is online. It includes 14 sections on saw sharpening tools, saw cleaning, tuning and sharpening a crosscut saw.
    LINK:

And one last book from the USDA Forest Service that describes sharpening tolls for crosscut saws. New Tools for Old Saws (illust. 16 pages).
    LINK:
   http://www.fs.fed.us/t-d/pubs/pdfpubs/pdf05232815/pdf05232815dpi300.pdf

I sincerely hope that you will find them interesting and of value to all crosscut saw lovers, Tom

I took the liberty of moving in here so it remains at the top of the section in the 'sticky', too!  Thanks, again, Tom

Once again, zammer found another good place for identifying common wild edibles.  Good photos, parts of the plant to utilize, maps, etc.   I thought it would be good to include it here for finding it quickly when needing reference material.  It's a GOOD one.....THANK YOU, ZAMMER!

I just found an old bookmark that I thought was gone forever. While searching internet archive I googled the authors name and found it is now an https site instead of http.

There is a lot of great information and practical to everyday life. A lot of topics. I am wondering if drumrunners is alive somewhere?

I found this site today. Many old books on blacksmithing, carpentry and stuff like that for download, printing-whatever you want to do with it
