Title: New guy here, got a new camp axe, need helpl Id'ing it!
Post by: koger on February 20, 2016, 08:29:29 PM
Hello all, Sam Koger here, new to the forum, like what I see so far. Lifelong hunter/gatherer, 30+ years experience as a gunsmith, ML enthusiast, and quality tool and blade collector/user. I have a penchant for good quality, American and European made axes, knives, hatchets, shovels and spokeshaves, or any well made hand tool. Last few years I have picked up a few of what is termed here locally in KY as camp axes, slightly bigger than a small hatchet, with a 20" give or take handle, easy to carry, put in a pack etc. Today I picked up one, with a  little red paint, light rust that cleaned off easy with a soft wire wheel. It is a forged head, with a DY stamped on the front of the poll, 1 1/2 on the back side. I cleaned it up, put in a new handle, and carefully sharpened it as it appeared never to have been sharpened past the factory edge, which was used till dull. In a few minutes, had it sharp enough to shave my arm, no stubble left! It has a thin teardrop poll, which tapers to a convex, I guess is the term head. Thinner than normal blade, seems of good quality, anybody got a guess as to who made it. I guy I know thought it was Dutch, maybe came thru Canada.  All replies appreciated.

A photo or two would be a lot of help. I wouldn't know but someone here will.
Welcome from Nebraska.

In a thread on DY stamp I found by searching axe makers marks( I'm not sure how to post a link from my pad)

Should be easy to locate that forum thread.

Anyway, there seemed to be a faint stamp on one of the sides. I guess you're not finding anything like that on yours. Maybe the DY mark is the smiths initials, not a brand name.

Hi Sam,
Were you ever able to ID the "DY" axe?

Hi Sam,
Were you ever able to ID the "DY" axe?

This is a very old thread,  and the author only ever made one post, so it is likely you won't get a response about the axe ID.
