Do you know the history of the name of the butte?  We have a Crow butte in Butte county SD.  It got its name from a fight between the Crows and Lakota back in 1822 and another in 1858.

Once again, I rely on James Hanson, Director of The Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron for information that was published in their quarterly.  This article from The Rapid City Journal talks about it....

Just a small nameless lake.  The Sandhills region of Nebraska sits directly atop the Ogallala Aquifer and the water table is very near the surface.  The dunes are a vast region for grazing cattle on the native grasses that grow there.  Hay is the major crop and lakes & rivers are very numerous throughout the region.  Nebraska feeds more cattle than any state in the union.

Thanks Wolfy.  Interesting story.  The Crow got away in that fight.  They did not fare so well in the Crow Butte fights in Harding County SD.  All were killed.  (I said Butte Co. earlier but the site is in Harding county)

Left here last Saturday (8/2/2014), stayed out about 5 days and never left the state.....very relaxing, beautiful country and great people!  We concentrated on 'blue highways' and towns with less, sometimes much less, than 200 people.....mostly in the Sandhills and the fringes.  Came home rested and smilin' for a change! ;D

That is interesting Wolfy.  I am not sure they know exactly what they are talking about though as the fight in 1822 has little, if any factual verification.  There were some artifacts taken from the base of the butte but by whom and where they are I don't know. 

I suspect the name comes from an oral history context regarding the fight and since they have a date it may have originally come from a winter count.

On some of the early maps of this region the butte is referred to as the "hills where the Crows were killed."  I have seen several with this comment.  My 1887 Atlas of Dakota territory says the same thing.

Yeah, I read most of the more pertinent & authoritative-sounding replies from that one tribal 'expert' and he indicated that the traditional 'oral' history was sketchy at best and that he trusted the winter counts for more accurate information.....eve n though, he admitted that they were not the most reliable in some cases, so who knows? :shrug:

Mostly the deep-thinking dorks in the Lincoln/Omaha area seem to decide these things.  They certainly never asked me my opinion because 'NICE' is truly offensive to me.....just plain stupid! :P

I have a friend whose brother is married to a woman whose family ranches or ranched near Cody Nebraska.  That whole area is nice country but hard on women and dogs.

Not many old sod houses left in the farm country.  There were a couple by our farm in eastern Colorado but if they are not roofed over and kept up they erode and fall in.  That one looks to be hanging on.

Thanks ol' buddy! :cheers:   Yeah, lots of people have no idea and that was kind of the inspiration that I had in mind for this thread.  I've had a lot of people that have never been here, or only drive across it on Interstate 80, east & west through the Platte River Valley, tell me it's too FLAT! :lol: :rofl:   Ain't hardly nothin' flat here EXCEPT the Platte River Valley.......exactl y why the Union Pacific Railroad built the first transcontinental route through it, the Oregon & Mormon Trails followed it, and it was selected as one of the major east/west routes for Eisenhower's 'autobahn.'   There's a whole 'nother world out there if people would just venture off the four-lanes a few miles and see for themselves.  IT'S NOT TOO BAD! :popcorn:

FORT RANDALL MILITARY RESERVATION IRON BOUNDARY MARKER, LYNCH, BOYD COUNTY, NEBRASKA

Perhaps some of you remember this article that I posted some time back, on the history of 'Old Baldy' which at one time, was situated on what was once, the Fort Randall Military Reservation.  Part of the reservation was in South Dakota and part was in Nebraska.  This article has a map & tells the very interesting tale of the last two of the eight iron markers that once marked the boundaries of the fort.  If you don't wish to read the whole article (it's well worth reading), scroll to the end of the article for a map, pictures and the story of this iron marker in Lynch.
