It sounds like a worldwide banana disaster is in the works. :'(

OH Great,  that may spell the end of Cheerio's as well.

Ooooo  I love banana's in my cheerios!         I guess I'm going to have to start freezing them.

There's a lesson there somewhere...   getting monopoly on plants and only having one or two breeds , a disaster is just around the corner.

WW
On particularly rough days when I'm sure I can't possibly endure, I like to remind myself that my track record for getting through bad days so far is 100% and that's pretty good.

NO banana cream pie is a condition I would rather not contemplate in my old age.   :-X

I think this same thing happened in the fifties and a new variety, the current one, was developed.  Genetic variety is the spice of life.

If I am not mistaken, & I didn't read the whole topic/posts, but I am pretty sure that ALL bananas are clones from the original plant. I will go look now, but it seems I read that tidbit of info somewhere a long time ago. Basically, they are all just "grafts" by nature, from a single plant.

I will go look & return, If I find I am wrong. Unless someone beats me to the draw.
 ;)

Edit: Here is just one article I found. There are more though if anyone wants to look.

I love being out in the woods!   I like this quote from Mors Kochanski - "The more you know, the less you carry". I believe in the same creed, & think  "Knowledge & honed skills" are the best things to carry with ya when you're out in the wilds. They're the ultimate "ultralight" gear! ;)

My wife is a Government worker and has seen studies on the banana problem for at least 5-6 years.

There pretty close to a GMO clone that's resistant that's no different than the ones we are buying now so I'm not all that worried.  As in final trials close.

Just like the Orange, it was nearly gone in the 80's until the GMO Grapefruit variant was OK'ed by our government overlords and I bet you don't know the difference.  I know I don't.

Same with White Wheat and now Mexico is suing the US government over loosing it's genetic diversity to our GMO hybrids.

You might have trouble getting bananas in your local grocery store, but you could grow them yourself. The banana isn't becoming extinct, just impossible to grow in acre fields of clones. The first commercial banana, the Gros Michel, can be bought and grown in your home, where it's unlikely to catch a disease. Unless you are around a bunch of other banana plants, of course.

That Orbean post is five years old.

I do wonder where he went though.  He made some good posts here.
