Forum is nearing its capacity.
« on: July 30, 2022, 02:45:43 AM »
I've been receiving warning emails from the hosting service that the forum is at 98.5% storage capacity and we'll either need to increase capacity, or delete files.  I am considering deleting most of the vendor forums since they haven't been used in a long time.

I had been collecting ad revenue from Google adsense for years and it was routed automatically to an account which was connected to PayPal.  The hosting service and domain name service were both paid from this account automatically every year.  However not too long ago Google policy changed and they stopped paying for the ads they run.  This means that account no longer collects any ad revenue.

I have kept the forum up and running as a courtesy to our long term members who have stuck around from the beginning.  But I think time is running out, or has passed us by.

I am going to let the forum continue on as long as it can automatically renew itself, but once it is no longer self sustaining it won't be available anymore.

I will try to see if there is a way to download and archive everything because there is a not-insignificant body of knowledge here that might be worth preserving.

So I must ask that everyone please not purchase any more subscriptions.  Given that they are typically a 1 year term, I can't guarantee the forum will continue to operate for a whole year and I don't want anyone to subscribe and not get a full year out of it.

I'm sorry that it can't continue on indefinitely, but we had a good run of over a dozen years.  I hope that all of you are able to migrate to a new home online when this one finally stops working.

Thanks for the notice Ron, we have had a good run, and most of the years out of that dozen or so have been wonderful, most of us that are still here from the beginning have made and lost good friends here, and we've had some members that weren't so good.
For the relatively short time that this forum has existed allot of water has passed over it's dam, it will be sad for me to not make this place my first stop every morning with my first cup of coffee, I can remember days when that morning log in lasted until suppertime, though we were never that big a forum in number we were close and the discussions were many and varied, most of what I'll miss has already passed, there are only a handful of us left now and we all knew that the end was coming.
If I had to choose the one thing that I'll miss most about the B&B forum I think it will be the recipes that we all shared and those conversations that revolved around or developed from talking about food, I still make our favorite Chocolate Cake from a recipe that Smoke Walker posted way back when, not long ago I dug back in those early threads to find his recipe for Southern Sweet Tea, I hope there is some way that all that history can be saved.
Every once in a while when there's a glitch in the forum software and we can't log in we usually find it upsetting, It's hard to imagine never being able to log on again.
Thanks to you and Red for starting it up and you for keeping it going for as long as you've been able to, though B&B has not been as big a part of my life as it used to be when it and us were all in our prime, but when it finally goes I for one will miss it dearly.

I had a feeling the final curtain was coming down
Kind sad
But it was a great run.
I had a ball
Anyway I was wondering  if the kracs need to find a new home.

This makes me sad.
I don't post a lot, but I read the forum a lot.
I'm gonna miss it when the end comes.

it's a business decision.  If the forum runs a deficit, then you have to shut it down.   Thanks for the years,  it's been great

That would be a shame but is understandable.  Thank you Ron for making the effort to keep it going as long as it can go.  I know it's slowed down a lot but periodic check-ins and seeing what folks are up to was nice to do.

I am OutdoorEnvy on every forum I am on in case we cross paths down the road.  I'll still post here and check in until the lights get turned out.  Good to know and share with you all over the years!  It's been a pleasure!

Same here OE, I have enjoyed my time here and especially all the members of this family through the years, as folks moved on and others passed the interests of those new and remaining members have changed over time and most of our sub forums go unused, so I guess it's time, they (never have quite figured out who "they" are) say that nothing lasts forever, I guess some things just take longer than others to fade into the mist, I sure wish B&B was one of them.
It sad that we humans take so much for granted in what we have that we don't give enough importance to whatever it is while we still have it, then it's gone and we are left with only the memories of those friends and those conversations, and soon even they will be gone.
Like OutdoorEnvy, I use my Moe M. user name on most of the other outdoor forums that I frequent so I'm not hard to find if anyone is looking for me, I know where to find Stan and OE, like those others of us who are still here I'll stay to the end, and if anyone happens on a forum or site that we can keep in touch on, please post it.

It has been an interesting journey   Reading back through conversations and posts in various subforums is a good review of days past.

In the Top Secret area there is only a single post from 2016 I noticed. It seems the site was very active back then. Anyone recall why that is or am I mistaken?

Anyway there is still a lot of good information archived in various places that has been enjoyable to read.

I'll miss this place. If you go through the members list there are just a ton of people who made a contribution to this place.  Thanks to all of them.  I made a great friend in Wolfy.  He told me about this forum when it started up so I joined in 2012.  Met a lot of good folks and a couple of not so good folks.  I enjoyed Woods posts and you tube videos a lot over the years.  The Kracs made this place a lot of fun and I'll throw out a special thanks all of you guys.

When it folds up I guess we will get a 404 or something like that.  Adios Amigos, I enjoyed the time.

Woods was special and his little dog dinger was a hoot, but there were allot of special people who have made this forum unique over the years, I thought about posting a memorial thread consisting of a list of names of all our passed and present members that have contributed so much to making this place so great, but it would take allot of time, typing, and brain stretching recall to remember all of them and all of their names.
It's really sad to think that they and we will be no more on these pages, and just as sad that we will loose all of the knowledge that is stored in these pages of threads and posts on so many subjects, just the recipes we have accumulated are a treasure that will be lost somewhere in cyberspace probably never to be read again.
I so hope that most of us can stay in contact through other forums and venues going forward.

Other forums?  Outdoor forums?  I have trouble passing the IQ test on most of them (mine has 3 digits) but there must be one or two out there that have this one's capacity for real diversity and common decency.  I'll probably keep my "windy" handle on the next one I try.  Hasta la vista, y'all!

Are most of you guys on Facebook?  I'm not....but, perhaps I should be.    My question is, can we form some kind of loosely-knit group there that would allow us to remain in contact with one another after we are no longer able to do that here?  It's ironic that FB could be our saving grace after becoming one of the major reasons most of these small forums are failing! >:(

F*** Google. You can't find any other outdoors sponsors to help keep this online? Patriot supply, Pathfinder, Major's surplus, or even Ripstop by the roll?

Yes, I can start a private group and invite those that want to join to it.  If there is an interest in that, I'll start the Facebook group.  Let me know.

For those of you that missed it, another conversation about this subject is being carried on in the Florida groups discussion board under
Plan B for finding a new place to keep in touch (or something like that), there are several suggestions that you may want to consider.

I would be in on a FB group too.  Private groups work pretty well.  The couple that I am in are about things in the area I live and they seem to be okay.

Has anyone seen what it costs to keep this forum going besides Ron?  Has anyone talked to Ron about it or asked if he would just turn the forum over if the cost isn't prohibitive?

What kind of money is needed to keep the lights on?  I've been occupied with PT and dealing with work comp lately so I've been a bit scarce but I'd miss this place!  Hopefully it can be archived?  Maybe forums are old fashioned and not in vogue anymore but they're the only social media I really like.

What kind of money is needed to keep the lights on?

For some reason this hasn't been let out. I would think there might be a handful of us willing to get together to support this place.

On top of cost there is still the issue of uploading photos. There are three threads in the help section. I just went to upthecreek's tree tent and there are no photos in that thread or the stairs to it thread. This is the main reason I'm not here much. I've said it many times. we need to be able to upload from the hard drive directy in today's technonlogy.
So lets beef up the bandwidth and storage, upgrade this place for the 2000's. Just give a general cost so we have something to work with.
I just built an A frame in my woods for the scout tent I bought years ago from wilderbeast. I was looking for the platform size and luckily it's in writing. I might start a thread, Might put a link to another forum where it can be seen.
Post the cost of running the site. Not all of us here are penniless and you might be surprised if someone where to step up and support it for a year or two.
